Shen Zhaolin (1801-1862), also known as Zhi Zhisheng, was a native of Qiantang (present-day Hangzhou, Zhejiang). In the sixteenth year of Daoguang (1836), he entered the priesthood, and served as an official to the left capital Imperial History, and in the tenth year, he was the Head of the Household Department and the Military Aircraft Minister. The British and French forces invaded Beijing and looted the Yuanmingyuan, and the Xianfeng Emperor fled to Rehe, vigorously advocating the War of Resistance and opposing Yanfu. He ordered the prefectures and counties directly subordinate to organize vigilante groups to harass and attack the invading army. In the first year of Tongzhi (1862), he was appointed as the governor of Shaanxi and Gansu, and used troops to return to Xining.
