在傳統上ioctl函數是用于哪些普遍使用，但不适合歸入其他類别的任何特性的系統接口。Posix去掉了ioctl，它通過建立特殊的posix标準化的包裹函數來代替ioctl。但是仍然有許多網絡方面的操作和終端操作等，仍然需要使用ioctl。ioctl中關于終端的操作最多。，其接口定義如下：

在這個定義中，顯示的頭檔案隻是ioctl函數本身所要求的頭檔案。通常，還要求其他相應操作的頭檔案，因為request的定義在不同的頭檔案中。例如，除Posix所說明的基本操作之外，終端ioctl都需要頭檔案<termios.h>。ioctl的主要用途如下表所示：

上面這個表主要是參考《Unix環境進階程式設計》中的表，原文中是包括四列的，最後一列顯示的是相應操作的數量，我删除這列是因為這個數量現在可能已經不太準确，而且知道數量也沒有什麼意義。下面會貼出來再man手冊中ioctl_list中列出的一個比較完整的ioctl操作清單，清單中// I-O表示第三個參數是一個值-結果參數，// MORE表示需要不止一個參數或者會傳回多個值，更加具體的可以通過man ioctl_list來檢視。

這個清單隻是用于查找相應操作需要的資料結構，以前在使用這個接口時，雖然知道使用哪個操作，但是不知道第三個參數應該是什麼樣的。常用的一些操作可以參考《Unix網絡程式設計》卷一中的ioctl章節，上面講解的還是非常詳細的。
