In 1984, Tianjin decided to build a food street, the address was selected in the south city, from Rongye Street in the east, to Qingshan Street in the west, from Qinghe Street in the south to Shenyi Street in the north. In the past, this was the center of Nanshi, surrounded by the Republic Theater, the Shangquan Xian Cinema, the "Rain Comes and Scatter" for luanzhou films, the "Bungee Jumping" shed for singing and commenting, the Qingyun Luozi Hall, and many white-faced children's halls.
Old Tianjin people know that Nanshi is not only "three disregards", but also a snack holy land. As early as the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the People's Republic, Nanshi formed a food market, from morning to night, small stalls can eat oil tea, fried stew, tea soup, fried cake, pot cake, barley porridge, noodle tea, pie, vegetarian buns, noodle noodles, and even drink Beijing bean juice. Many of these homes have been passed down from generation to generation and have a unique flavor. There is also a small shop specializing in "Folding Luo", and every day many poor people line up to buy leftovers, and the people give it an ironic name: The Six Kingdoms Hotel. The food market continued until the 1960s, when Nanshi became a residential area, and the food street was demolished, and more than 400 households were moved.

At 3:20 p.m. on August 11, 1984, the foundation stone of the Nanshi Food Street Project was broken and was undertaken by the First Construction Company of Tianjin Municipal Housing Management Bureau. 100 days later, on the morning of January 1, 1985, the opening ceremony of Nanshi Food Street was held. The opening banquet was held in PenglaiChun Restaurant, attended by big leaders, Luo Yusheng, Shang Mingzhu, Ding Zhiyun, Chang Baoting, Guo Zhenqing, Guan Mucun all performed at the banquet, and the famous painter Huang Ji painted a donkey on the spot, with the inscription "Cao Ji Donkey Meat Pavilion Under the Knife".
The majestic Nanshi Food Street is displayed in front of the people of Tianjin, and the designer of this complex is Yuan Jiashu, the granddaughter of Yuan Shikai, who graduated from Tianjin University and was an architect of the Tianjin Architectural Design Institute at that time. Food Street is not a street, but a three-story complex. On all four sides are four ancient court-style gate towers, in the middle of which are artificial granite arched door openings, and the plaque above the door opening is engraved with the five characters of "Nanshi Food Street" in Wang Xizhi's font. The east, west, south and north corners of the complex have four Octagonal Towers with Qing-style imitation bucket structures. After entering the doorway, in the middle of the inside is the cross Yongdao, which has a roof at the upper end of the Yongdao and is flanked by shops.
Yuan Jiashu runs through the traditional pattern of the Chinese nation - octagonal shape in the design, from the plan of the food street building complex, to the columns, windows, roofs, corner towers, archways, the guardrails of the two-story commercial street, the palace lights in front of the shops, the indoor flower partitions, where tourists go, they can see the octagon. The Food Street is also decorated with seven tile murals, the largest two are two meters wide and one meter and five meters high, one is the scenery of Huaqing Pond in Xi'an, and the other is the Big Wild Goose Pagoda of Xuanzang's exegesis.
