Interview | Yang Haoyu: Behind a role is the cooperation of the team

author:The Paper

The TV series "An Jia" is popular, and the "Xie Tingfeng" played by Yang Haoyu has become one of the most eye-catching characters in the play. This "old fritter" combs a big oil head, a flower shirt is tucked into the waistband of the pants, a leather bag is clipped, and people laugh three points, and the tongue is bright lotus, and the slippery hand is not left. It really deduces the shrewdness of Uncle Shijing in the Shanghai alley, but at the same time, this is a good-hearted, persistent and responsible role.

Looking at "Xie Tingfeng", many viewers will feel that this actor is familiar. In recent years, Yang Haoyu has made many works, such as Uncle Gong in "Dragon Gate Dart Bureau", He Lianke in "The Wandering Earth", and Mr. Leng in the TV series "White Deer Plain". His performance is also solemn and harmonious, simple and natural. Yang Haoyu said that he does not like the exaggerated comedy performance method of "tickling the audience", he is more inclined to the character and the comedy points that come with the situation, "I also try to be sincere when I interpret." Leaving aside these joyful characters, Yang Haoyu himself considers himself a "silent and indifferent" person.

For the character of Xie Tingfeng, Yang Haoyu has his intimacy. He lived for a long time in the alleys of Shanghai, and there are many observations of the archetypes of the characters in them. He also mentioned that when filming, he often thinks of a relative of his family. "A typical Shanghainese, not tall, looks very shrewd, especially like the uncle in the alley." This helped him interpret the character.

Yang Haoyu was born in Chongqing and moved to Shanghai as a teenager, and the education on both sides is completely different, "The junior high school results are a mess." "High school technical school, mechanical and electrical maintenance. This is a good profession, Yang Haoyu recalled that after graduation, in 1991 and 92, as a front-line worker, his salary with bonus, nearly 4,000 yuan, but Yang Haoyu did not get a sense of achievement from it. He worked as an electrician, nine to five every day, with plenty of free time at night. Yang Haoyu did not want to stay in a bedroom that was only about three square meters in size, "I don't want to live there, and I don't want to stay at home, I think it's good to be outside for 24 hours." ”

Therefore, he worked during the day, worked at night, worked as a vegetable runner in the hotel, delivered wine at night, and worked in various positions in the dance hall hotel. When he was a running vegetable runner, he felt that the most handsome profession in the world was the head chef, "incomparably glorious, wearing a halo, you know?" If I hadn't become an actor, I would have been a head chef. At night, he felt that the most aura was DJ, playing all kinds of music, becoming the focus of the crowd, making everyone's emotions boil together, and one person controlling the atmosphere of the whole field. That rush of adrenaline made him remember it.

"I've never been particularly 'excited' about working as an electrician." He recalled. At that time, after graduating, he went to see the Three Gorges Dam, and at that moment he really admired the power of the great labor of mankind, and in the face of this magnificent miracle created by human beings to transform nature, his adrenaline soared, and his excitement came. But returning to his daily routine, he couldn't find the excitement of facing greatness.

Admitted to the Shanghai Theater Academy, facing the lights and facing the audience, Yang Haoyu finally found that "excitement", which is a sense of freedom from creating and controlling on the stage. But life is realistic, when he first entered the actor's industry, he went to the crew to run dragon sets, earning 20 yuan a day, which was completely incomparable with when he was an electrician. "At that time, I talked to my friends countless times, and when I talked about it, I asked myself, why did I come to this line?" He concluded that the first is that he can find like-minded friends, and the second is to "make myself happy", "This is a very important thing, which is why I chose this line." ”

Yang Haoyu recalled that when he first arrived in Shanghai, in the face of a completely unfamiliar world, he did not dare to talk to people, and he was particularly inferior. "I thought I was very introverted, not very good at expressing myself, and I felt very lonely." Drama, on the other hand, gives him a space where he doesn't have to be bound by anything, wearing the mask of the character, and freely expressing his emotions and experiences. "Drama education can actually slowly change a child's personality and change a child's acceptance of this society."

And those who have experienced work have provided his performance with a real experience from life, and at the same time, let him have a strong ability of empathy and understanding: "I can understand what kind of role, what kind of character, I feel that there is nothing unreasonable." 」 Because there is nothing unreasonable in this society. If you understand the complexity of this society, you will not say to the script: this is impossible, this is unreasonable, this should not be. In my case there is none, all reasonable, should be, all possible. Nowadays, Yang Haoyu is still accustomed to observing all kinds of characters, around him, at the door, in the vegetable market, all kinds of characters, "Each character image is a seed for me, save it there, maybe one day I will play one like that, I will know what his image is." ”

【Dialogue】

The Paper: When you first read the script at the beginning, were there any differences and changes in your perception of Xie Tingfeng's character and your later perception of him in the process of shaping him?

Yang Haoyu: There will be. When we receive a role, it is strange at the beginning, and after reading the script, we will think about who are around us, and it is more similar to this role. Slowly from unfamiliar to clear to clear on this role, we also have to experience life, and we also have scripts to read. On the first day of filming, although I had done a lot of homework before, I was still a little unfamiliar with this role. After three days, this strangeness slowly disappeared, and then it was completely integrated into this role, that role is me, I am that role, very familiar. Like making friends, there is a process of slow contact, to knowing, understanding, and loving each other, which is the same as the relationship with the characters.

The Paper: Xie Tingfeng is a very preemptive image in the first episode, especially vivid, what preparations have been made for the shaping of this role?

Yang Haoyu: After this character slowly became clear, we probably set makeup twice, once with a beard and once without a beard. At the beginning, the costume was more formal, and the teacher Sun Li also made a lot of comments on the costume. That flower shirt is Sun Li teacher added, including hairstyle, at the beginning is still relatively straight kind of three or seven open, our styling teacher feels that simply come to a big back, did not expect that the effect is particularly good. From the moment I received this scene, the costume teacher, the makeup teacher, including the director, we were all in tune little by little, and then little by little to make this character more accurate and clearer, which is a matter of collective wisdom. In the end, everyone still recognized it and was very happy.

The Paper: In fact, many audiences are more familiar with your comedy works, but you have also acted in a lot of dramas and dramas, for you, comedy and drama, which of these two performances may be more difficult for you?

Yang Haoyu: I think it's all fine, it's all the same. Because for comedy, good comedy, it is divided into several levels. Generally a special public comedy, it is the need for you to go to a particularly exaggerated performance, to tickle the audience's itch. There is also a kind of comedy, which comes from the character of the character, written on the script, and you can just act seriously. Relatively speaking, I prefer the latter kind of comedy, which I like quite a bit, and the performance method of this comedy is not much different from the main drama. So for me, the two plays are the same.

The Paper: Why do you love acting?

Yang Haoyu: I think its charm has always been that I can have a colorful life, maybe my own life is very plain, but I can enjoy a colorful life and a variety of emotions in the play, which is a particularly good life experience for the actor. Second, you can meet a lot of friends in this environment, and you can also get pleasure in this work. There is also a lot of actors who love to perform, whether it is standing on the stage and the curtain is pulled open, or standing in front of the camera after the director shouts to start, their adrenaline will soar, they will enter a more excited state, the performance will bring some chemical reactions to your body, happy, happy, excited, when the performance is good, everyone recognizes that it is very pleasant; when the performance is not good, it will be very frustrated, but the whole person is still in a state of excitement. That's the charm of this profession. Acting is sometimes like love, giving people an instinctive sense of pleasure.

The Paper: Will the roles you have interpreted affect your life, including some of the ways and choices you make about your life?

Yang Haoyu: Yes, I think this is something that affects each other. In fact, every time you receive a role, it is a learning process. To leave yourself with things related to the role to develop, to take away some of the things that have nothing to do with the role, and then the role has something that you don't have, you have to look for, the process is also very beautiful.

The Paper: It's funny, you have to find a seed that is very similar to the character from yourself, and then extend the seed to expand. The profession of an actor is still going inward to find a kind of strength.

Yang Haoyu: Yes, the small seed is found, slowly water it, give it sunshine, blow the wind, let it grow slowly, but also grow well, this is a careful care process, the process of finding and discovering, very interesting. And you will find in the process that the screenwriter will also help you, because he will first provide a more figurative character there, the costume and makeup teacher will help you, the director will not mention, in the whole style of your performance, he will control one, so it is the result of a teamwork behind it.

The Paper: When you withdraw from one role and prepare to move on to the next role, how do you generally replenish that energy, or how do you allow yourself to eliminate the influence of the previous role and return to the next role?

Yang Haoyu: You have just answered for me, that is, to return to the state of a blank piece of paper, to make your life very simple, to maintain a good schedule, and to have a simple mentality. In fact, emptying down is also a learning process, for us, professional learning is a lifelong thing, including now I hear some fun tongue twisters, I will still learn, hear some interesting songs, I also learn. I learn things slowly, even if I give myself a week, half a month or whatever, to learn a song, I think it is very interesting. This process is also a kind of preparation, while learning new things, it is also easy to empty some of the original things.

The Paper: Do you personally have a fixed standard for selecting scripts?

Yang Haoyu: I think hollywood's script writing method is quite worth learning. For example, in a movie script, how many events to appear, this indicator is a hard target. Basically a page is a minute, my script is 120 pages, not more than a minute. From page 5 onwards there will be a great event, and there will be a transformation on page xxx, a great transformation on page forty, and a great change on page seventy. How many events are required in a play, all quantitative assessments. It's a good template from a business standpoint. If it's a commercial film, I'd like to get a script that fits this approach. I don't care about the literary and artistic film piece, this piece I think may be more hope to show the human nature of things, good or bad, can go deep into the emotional world of people's inner activities, can analyze these things. If I have a film and television work, I am probably these two requirements.
