Eel import and export statistics in the Japanese market in 2018

China Aquatic Products Channel reported that at the end of September, Japan's Ministry of Finance released statistics on the import and export of eels in the Japanese market (including live eels, grilled eels, and baby fish) in the 2018 eel year (September 2017 to August 2018). According to the data, the Japanese market imported 14,870 tons of roasted eels in 2018, a slight increase over the same period last year. This is the third consecutive year that the Japanese market has imported more than 14,000 tons of roasted eel products. In terms of price, the average price of imported grilled eels in the Japanese market in 2016 was 2237 yen/kg, and in 2017, it was 2186 yen/kg. In 2018, eels rose slightly by 221 yen year-on-year, and eventually reached 2407 yen/kg. Affected by the sharp harvest failure of eel seedlings at the beginning of the year, the import volume and average price of roasted eels in the Japanese market in 2018 both rose, which shows the degree of demand from local consumers for imported roasted eels.

On September 18, the United States announced a 10% import tariff on $200 billion of Chinese goods, including domestic roast eels. Chinese mainland eel industry related people frankly said: "Because of the trade war, the recent domestic roast eel exports to the United States have to pay high tariffs." At present, most of the domestically farmed European breeding eels are sold domestically, and the American breed roast eel may decline in the future due to the impact of the trade war. However, fortunately, the water temperature and temperature conditions of the main domestic live eel production areas are good recently, and the Growth Trend of American species eels is better. Although the price of large-scale American raw eels of 2P and 2.5P will not be greatly reduced in the future, the yen exchange rate will rise, and for Japanese customers, the cost performance is still very high.
