In 1943, Zhang Xinyi, then director of the Construction Department of Gansu Province, invited Dr. Luo Ming, a well-known Ecologist in the United States, to Lanzhou to help study and solve the drought problem. Luo Ming thought that Lanzhou was very suitable for planting melons, and promised to carry some "honeydew" melon seeds after returning to China and try planting them in Lanzhou.

In January of the following year, when US Vice President Wallace was passing through Lanzhou on his way to China, he personally handed over the seeds of "honeydew" melon carried by Rod Ming to Zhang Xinyi. In 1954, through Zhang Xinyi's organization, the successful trial planting in the sand field in Lanzhou area, because the seed was brought to Lanzhou by Wallace, the melon was named "Wallace" to commemorate it. In 1956, Deng Baoshan, then the governor of Gansu Province, took this melon skin pure white and derived it from Lanzhou, and proposed to change it to "white melon".
