In the construction of the Xiangyu Railway for several years, due to the steep natural conditions and the lack of mechanization level, it almost completely relied on the railway soldiers and young middle school students, who used their hands, shoulders, and feet to advance the completion of the project step by step, and many young railway soldiers and students paid a heavy price for the railway, and some even sacrificed their precious lives. According to incomplete statistics, on average, a young life is buried per kilometer. In the Bashan section of the Xiangyu Line alone, 108 railway soldiers died heroically in the 3-kilometer section, and their average age was only 19 years old. The connection of the Xiangyu Railway has greatly promoted the economic and cultural prosperity and development along the line. The prosperity of Shiyan, Ankang and Xiangyang today all comes from this heroic road. This railway has witnessed the rise of cities, as well as the struggle and struggle of generations.

In the first phase of the project from Hargai to Golmud section of the line across the alpine region, there are 8 or 9 months of wind and sand period every year, coupled with the serious lack of oxygen on the plateau, the boiling water is open at 85 degrees, and the rice and steamed buns are not steamed at all, and eating makes people's stomachs bloated, but they also have to bear heavy physical labor. I remember that in May 1976, the collapse of the Kwan Kok Tunnel has made me unforgettable. "Guanjiao" means "ladder to heaven" in Tibetan. Guanjiao Mountain, located in Tianjun County and Wulan County in Qinghai Province, lies between the Tianjun Grassland and the Qaidam Basin, and is the "East Gate" of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau through Qaidam. With a total length of 4.08 kilometers and an average altitude of more than 3,700 meters, the tunnel was the highest railway tunnel in mainland China at that time. At that time, the construction equipment of the railway soldiers was very simple, and there were no modern construction machinery. The tunnel relies on air guns, loaders, and bucket trucks, and is basically built by manpower. Subgrade construction is a bulldozer plus crowd tactic, and the newly imported Japan D-80 bulldozer is the most modern equipment. At that time, the 47th Regiment of the 10th Iron Division was responsible for the construction of the Guanjiao Tunnel, and found that a large area of landslides and blocked the exit, and 127 cadres and soldiers were trapped in the cave. After the tunnel collapsed, the instructor immediately summoned the battalion commander Fu and other Communist Party members at the scene to form a party branch to mobilize urgently, stabilize the mood, and proposed to find the horizontal hole in order to escape. At this time the new fighters said: We are young, we come! The old soldier said: We are experienced, let's come! The new fighters said that it was because we had no experience that we had to be trained. Everyone scrambled to be the first, and the instructor proposed to organize a party member commando. After the accident occurred, the party Central Committee, the headquarters of the railway corps, and the leading departments at all levels attached great importance to it, and the leaders of the divisions and regiments of the troops, as well as the leaders of Tianjun County, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province, immediately rushed to the scene, went to the front line in person, quickly organized the rescue headquarters, formulated a rescue plan, and took decisive measures. A steel pipe was driven into the tunnel to deliver oxygen to the tunnel. The personnel in the cave actively cooperated, and after more than 20 hours of emergency rescue and a life-and-death rescue, all 127 cadres and soldiers were safely evacuated without a single casualty, and the entire construction site was jubilant and morale was greatly boosted. First, the Liberation War was born. In order to meet the needs of the war, the Central Military Commission set up a railway column, which was divided into tasks such as road protection, railway maintenance, tunnel culverts, bridge erection, and boat-bridge communications. The railway troops organized the repair of 1,629 kilometers of routes and 976 bridges, including the Songhua River Railway Bridge and the double-track section connecting the Zhongchang Railway and the Harbin-Changzhou Railway, which effectively supported the Liaoshen Campaign, the Huaihai Campaign, and the River Crossing Campaign, and provided effective railway transport logistics support for the liberation of the whole country. In 1962, the outbreak of the self-defense counterattack war against India, in order to meet the operational needs of the People's Liberation Army, the railway troops sent the 24th Regiment of the 5th Iron Division to rush to build the Tibet Cuona to Tawang section of the highway located on the Sino-Indian border, because this is the choke point for the Indian army to carry out north-south maneuvers after the invasion, and it is also an important channel for our army to carry out larger-scale counterattacks and transport war materials, which is related to the overall situation. After more than 10 days of hard work, the railway soldiers finally completed the task of rushing to build the highway before the second phase of the self-defense counterattack.
Fifth, the period of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Vietnam and the War to Resist US Aggression and Vietnam and Laos. The troops of the 58th Regiment of the 13th Division of the Railway Corps were sent to Viet Nam in the mid-60s of the last century, risking the risk of savage bombing by the US army, and successively served as the section of Route 7 Guo Shen to Phu Lang; Highway 12 Laizhou to Mengdong section, Dien Bien Fu section, railway copper plate section of the rush repair and construction task. In more than two years, 392 railway soldiers have died in Viet Nam, and many others have been disabled for life, and the internationalist spirit displayed by the railway soldiers has been highly praised by President Ho Chi Minh of Viet Nam. In November 1961, the Railway Corps ordered the 5th Railway Division to quickly organize a reinforced regiment to complete the construction of the China-Laos Highway in a surprise attack. The 2,000 officers and soldiers of the 22nd Regiment of the 5th Iron Division worked in harsh environments such as high temperature, heavy rain and humidity in the tropical forest areas of Yunnan Province and Laos. Due to the high intensity of labor and the difficulty of living supply, many comrades fainted from heat, hunger, and exhaustion. After a year of hard work, the task was completed excellently.
Sixth, the period of self-defense and counterattack war against Vietnam. After the outbreak of the self-defense counterattack against Vietnam in 1979, the railway soldiers quickly sent part of the 1st and 2nd Iron Divisions to participate in the war, of which the 1st Iron Division went to Yunnan to undertake the railway support task from Kaiyuan to Hekou; The 2nd Railway Division went to Guangxi to undertake the railway support task from Changtang to Pingxiang, and effectively supported the PLA operation.
Seventh, the period of aiding the construction of subways to the DPRK. From 1968 to 1973, tens of thousands of technicians from the mainland were transferred to the DPRK, and various equipment and building materials were transported to the DPRK to assist the DPRK in building subways. The Preparatory Work Meeting for the 301 Metro Project of the Railway Corps Aid Office for Foreign Affairs made it clear that the 15th Railway Division was responsible for the construction task. The Pyongyang Metro has two lines, the Maxima Line and the Innovation Line, with a total length of about 35 kilometers and a total of 17 stations. It was completed and put into operation in 1975.
