In the first quarter of next year, Huawei's next-generation operating system, HarmonyOS Next, will be launched, and from that moment on, Huawei will officially part ways with Android and apps in the Chinese market.

This incident is not an isolated case, at the vivo developer conference in early November, vivo's self-developed operating system BlueOS made its debut. vivo said that BlueOS is a smart operating system independently developed for the era of general artificial intelligence, introducing the ability of vivo blue heart large model, and the first to be equipped with BlusOS is the new vivo WATCH 3.

Android is being abandoned and a new world of the Internet of Everything is coming

Another big factory, Xiaomi, also started running. Xiaomi's surging OS released in October significantly rewrites the underlying architecture, integrating Android and Xiaomi's self-developed Vela system.

Compared with other ecosystem partners, Huawei's HarmonyOS was launched as early as 2019, and its kernel consists of three parts: Linux, HarmonyOS microkernel, and LiteOS (a lightweight system designed specifically for IoT devices). The reason why HarmonyOS supports Android apps is that both HarmonyOS and Android use the Linux kernel, so they can be used compatible. It can be seen that earlier on, Huawei had begun to prepare for ecological independence. There are two reasons for this, on the one hand, to avoid being affected by the uncertainty of the external environment, and on the other hand, to see the market prospect of the "Internet of Everything".

Interestingly, compared with Huawei, Xiaomi is in a leading position at the product level of the "Internet of Everything", through self-research and IoT open platform, Xiaomi and its partners cover nearly 200 categories in the field of smart home, and the user experience is relatively good, but in the mobile phone, tablet, smart panel, smart speaker and other products as a home control center, the bottom layer of the system is still inseparable from Android.

As Lei Jun mentioned at the release of The Paper, "In the era of the Internet of Everything, the complexity and number of operating system branches involved in various devices, and the ecological connection gap between different systems and protocols may exceed many people's imagination. ”

Android is being abandoned and a new world of the Internet of Everything is coming

As the Android system with the highest market share in the smart terminal market, it is difficult to carry the great goal of "Internet of Everything".

As an open platform, different manufacturers can freely customize and modify the Android system, resulting in a great fragmentation of Android devices, and different standards and protocols will encounter difficulties in connecting and interacting with different IoT devices, limiting the interconnection capabilities and functions between devices.

Some low-to-mid-range Android devices may also have weak storage and processing power, which may affect data sharing and processing across devices. In addition to this, there are many versions of Android, and there are differences between different device manufacturers in pushing updates, resulting in large differences in system versions between devices. As a result, some devices are not able to get the latest features and security patches in a timely manner, impacting user experience and security.

The "Internet of Everything" puts forward new requirements for the underlying operating system, such as stronger openness to work with a variety of different devices, sensors and applications, and good security guarantees for different vendors, developers and stakeholders, including data transmission encryption, identity authentication, vulnerability fixing, and malicious attack detection. As more and more devices connect to the internet, the security requirements of operating systems will only increase.

High reliability and stability are also important features, and in the event of a chain reaction caused by a node or device that causes a network outage, the system must be able to automatically identify the fault and support rapid repair and correction. The use case for the Internet of Everything also requires real-time performance – the ability to quickly respond to and process data from devices, sensors, and other applications.

After clarifying the goal of developing a new operating system, Huawei and Xiaomi have taken different technical routes. The Paper OS uses the traditional macrokernel design to expand functions in a modular way, while HarmonyOS uses a microkernel design to separate as many functions such as hardware drivers, file management, and system services as independently and run as independent modules, and realize the combination of functions through componentization.

vivo's BlueOS seems to pay more attention to the application ability of AI large models in terms of functions, and is connected to the multi-modal capabilities of vivo's self-developed Blue Heart AI large model. In terms of security, BlueOS is the industry's first operating system with a system framework written in Rust, which is more secure than Java for Android. Using the self-developed BlueXlink connection technology, BlueOS is compatible with industry-standard protocols with distributed design concepts, and data can be securely transferred and accessed between multiple devices.

In fact, whether it is the surging OS's focus on "people, vehicles, and home ecology", HarmonyOS's full-scene distribution, and BlueOS's AI large model application, they are still only a small part of the "Internet of Everything", and the needs of intelligent healthcare, intelligent transportation, intelligent education, smart city, and intelligent manufacturing will give these domestic OS a broader ecological space.

When foreign technology media first reported that HarmonyOS would not be compatible with Android applications in August this year, most of the commenters under multiple reports thought that the possibility of HarmonyOS beating Android was very small, and even some people still thought that HarmonyOS was a "skin" of Android.

I have to say that these people really think that the "heart" of China's domestic OS is too small. HarmonyOS does not necessarily have to beat Android, the "Internet of Everything" is originally a new world.
