A week after the truce, in Gaza, pictures show the deep suffering of the people

author:Mengde's view of the world

On Friday, fighting between the Israeli army and Hamas militants was suspended for seven days to allow for the exchange of Israeli and Palestinian hostages, after which a new war broke out.

Despite the growing calls on Israel's closest ally, the United States, to refrain from further harm to Palestinian civilians, and the international community's positive statements, the incident has occurred and is intensifying.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris said on Saturday that too many innocent Palestinians had been killed in Gaza, and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin considered it Israel's "moral responsibility" to protect civilians.

Speaking in Dubai, Harris said that Israel has the right to defend itself, but it must respect international law and humanitarian law.

"Frankly, the scale of civilian suffering, and the photos and videos that come out of Gaza, are devastating," Harris said.

About 1.8 million people, or 80% of Gaza's population, have fled their homes since October 7, according to the United Nations.

According to the UN humanitarian office, more than 400,000 displaced people have sought refuge in Rafah and nearly 300,000 displaced people have taken refuge in Khan Younis.

The World Health Organization says the disease is spreading through overcrowded shelters and temporary school housing.

More than 15,200 people had died as of Saturday, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and on Sunday, Israeli forces bombarded large swathes of the Gaza Strip while killing and injuring dozens of Palestinians, with civilians in the besieged areas seeking refuge in the shrinking south.
