If Chinese films have a rating, then "Wading Through the Sea of Anger" must be an R-rated film
Just think about it.
You are a middle-aged father who divorced his wife when he was young, and his only daughter was awarded to himself.
You are a fishing boat owner, and it is fishing season, and you have taken more than 30 boats into the sea with all your might, calculating the expenses and profits of each boat and each net, which is just enough for your daughter to study in Japan.
This life is finally going to come out!
However, just as the fishing boat was about to reel in the nets, a piercing bell rang in his ears.
You picked up the phone impatiently, and the sound of your ex-wife breaking down came from the other end—
"My daughter is lost in Japan!"
The nurse is anxious, you left more than 30 ships and flew to Japan, fiddling with your fingers like a headless fly, babbling, and asking for news of your daughter.
At night, there was still a piece of bad news-
The daughter died
She was stabbed 17 times, none of which were fatal, and she did not die until she had drained her blood, and there had been too much human sex before she died.
At the age of a flower, she was destroyed, ravaged, and insulted in a lonely foreign land, and finally turned into a cold corpse.
Angry, enough to burn this sea.
Wading Through the Sea of Wrath
Across the Furious Sea
The above is the beginning of the story of the movie "Wading through the Angry Sea" (hereinafter referred to as "the Angry Sea").
The film was directed by Cao Baoping and was completed as early as 2019, but later due to masks and the deletion that had to be made, it was delayed until this year.
However, although this film is 4 years late, it is the most anticipated film every year, and there is no one.
The reason, of course, is director Cao Baoping.
As the finale of the "Burning Heart Series Trilogy", "Angry Sea" has been a big star in the film and television industry since its inception, although the only work in the series is "Scorching Sun", but this one is enough to become a god.
The style is fierce, the characters are profound, and the plot is searing.
In retrospect, almost all the movies I have watched in the past few years have patch advertisements for "Angry Sea".
Zhou Xun howled heartbreakingly, and Huang Bo roared hysterically.
The two of them were in the pouring rain, as if they were enchanted, and they didn't look like people at all.
What's even better is that when "Angry Sea" finally saw the light of day, there were a few big words written in the new materials:
"Viewers under the age of 18 are advised to choose to watch carefully. ”
There is no grading, buddy makes a grading himself.
This is too "Cao Baoping".
On Friday, November 25, "Wading the Sea of Wrath" was finally released.
In the gap between the topic movie "I Am a Mountain" and this year's popular king Zhang Yi's "Tip of the Knife", although "Angry Sea" was released one day late, the results are still invincible.
On the first day of release, it exceeded 100 million in a single day, and 71.43 million the next day.
As of today, "Angry Sea" has just been released for 3 days, with a cumulative box office of 210 million, and the final forecast has soared from about 460 million to 690 million to 700 million.
This sentence is confirmed once again -
There are no unpopular schedules, only unpopular movies.
The film's self-classification is not a gimmick, and the film is full of blood-pumping elements.
Gang rape, tooth pulling, arson, raw food, murder... Everything from the picture, the plot to the specific plot.
As we all know, foreign film classifications are divided into five levels: G, PG, PG13, R, and NC17.
Among them, G, PG, PG13 are easy to understand, G is all watchable, PG is a part that is not suitable for children, PG13 is under 13 years old and needs to be directed by adults, and R rating is only recommended for audiences over 17 years old to watch.
I subjectively classified this "Angry Sea" into an R grade, which is too fierce.
I give the movie a full score, it has Cao Baoping's ultimate stylization, and it also takes into account the market demand, whether it is style, narrative, and performance, it is impeccable.
Of course, there are some minor flaws, but compared with the performance of domestic films in the second half of the year, this film should be the movie that is most worthy of the four big words of "crime film".
The overall is three "cool" -
The first cool comes from the narrative, which is the beginning of the article.
's daughter was killed in Japan, and according to the filming techniques of the current "emerging director", the main event must be put first.
For example, at the beginning, the daughter's body appeared on the scene, and then the Japanese police investigated, and finally the father came from China, and the story unfolded.
This method is a typical method of "spectacle first" commercial films, first using a corpse to scare the audience and tell you that this is a crime film.
But the problem is that from this objective perspective, the audience just looks at it with an onlooker attitude, and does not bring emotions into it, which is also the main reason why many crime films are not "cool" at all.
The opening is too routine.
But Cao Baoping chose the more difficult and more effective way.
takes the daily perspective of his father "Lao Jin" (played by Huang Bo) as the starting point, so that the audience is brought into the perspective of his father, follows him to Japan, investigates, chases, and finally learns the death of his daughter "Xiao Na", spreading anger.
When the audience falls into Cao Baoping's "subjective trap", they will empathize with their father.
"How did her daughter die", "What torture did she suffer before she died", "Who killed her?"
These questions will pull the audience to continue watching.
If the beginning stands, the whole movie can stand.
Then again, the second cool is the character design.
After watching the movie, many people use "crazy" to describe this film, and the plot can be summed up in one sentence as the story of two madmen and two perverts.
When her daughter died, the old blonde went crazy and wanted to find the murderer and make a big fuss in Japan, while on the other hand, the biggest suspect "Li Miaomiao", that is, Xiao Na's boyfriend, secretly returned to China.
Li Miaomiao is a naturally bad breed, with a serious lack of empathy, and takes pleasure in harming others.
At the age of 7, he pulled out his grandmother's oxygen tube, and his sister was paralyzed at the age of 9.
And half of the reason for this personality comes from the absence of relatives, and the other half comes from the doting of his mother "Jing Lan" (played by Zhou Xun).
Lao Jin followed Li Miaomiao back to China, and found Jing Lan along the vine.
Jing Lan knew that her son was suspected of murder, but she still had to protect her son, and she did not hesitate to fight with Lao Jin, a pure crazy mother.
She describes herself as a "she-wolf" who can bite anyone to death for her son, while Lao Jin is a "mad dog" who can take revenge on her daughter, and he can ignore the law in order to take revenge.
Without professional reasoning and finding skills, Lao Jin just repeated a few simple actions -
Tailgating, entering the house, and questioning with fists.
In order to protect her son, Jing Lan locked Lao Jin in the basement, and Lao Jin went crazy and set fire to it, and the screen was full of fire, as if he was conducting a cult ritual.
And Li Miaomiao, who was hiding in the room, didn't care about him, and even had to go wild in the process of escaping.
Crazy, all crazy.
The logic of the characters in the whole movie is linear, and only brute force is used to break through the checks and balances between each other, revealing bright red flesh and blood, and spilling blood on people's faces.
The airport chase is one of my favorite scenes.
Jing Lan privately arranged for her son to go abroad, and happened to be seen by Lao Jin, who was escorted by the police, and the three of them were chasing each person and one car on the viaduct.
Black clouds overwhelmed the city, the air hunted and hunted, and three cars chased in the rain, and suddenly it rained "fish".
The tornado brought up a large number of fish in the sea, and they flew up and down, smashing against the windshield with a muffled sound and bursts of blood.
And the faces of the people are hideous and terrifying, shuttling in blood and rain, colliding...
is obviously realistic, but this scene has a dramatic tension that only surreal can have.
It's no exaggeration to say that it gave me an unprecedented sense of presence, as if I was watching a weird performance art, and it was the big screen that gave the audience a profound experience.
I'd rather pay to watch this scene again.
In the end, the surreal is taken to the extreme.
Lao Jin, Jing Lan, and Li Miaomiao collided together, Lao Jin wanted to question Jing Lan, but accidentally found Li Miaomiao.
The revenge was avenged, he was overjoyed and laughed wildly in the rain, and Jing Lan could only wail when he saw all this, praying that Lao Jin would spare his son.
But who can stop an angry father?
The movie put aside all the shackles brought by the "system", let Lao Jin's revenge rage burn, and everyone unscrupulously exposed their original nature, coupled with ingenious script design-
It's cool, it's so cool.
Let's talk about the third cool, human nature.
The plot of the movie is very explosive, but the real ferocity is actually hidden deeper in the script.
Cao Baoping said that he didn't want to make a simple revenge movie, he wanted to touch on more complex human issues.
In the movie, many characters have asked Lao Jin a question, do you love your daughter?
At the beginning of the movie, in fact, a foundation was laid for Lao Jin's character design very early.
The sea area he fishes in is not a legal area, but in the face of the obstruction of the coast guard, Lao Jin would rather fight physically than follow the system.
He was an unscrupulous man.
And in the process of avenging his daughter, he has made the choice of "revenge is greater than his daughter" many times.
In order to take revenge, he can directly show the private video of his daughter's violation to others.
At his daughter's funeral, between choosing to accompany his daughter to the last leg of the road and revenge, he also chose the latter.
The daughter was killed, he said, and it was a joke for him.
To put it bluntly, it is not so much about avenging his daughter, Lao Jin's anger comes more from filling his own gap.
And this gap is called patriarchy.
(The following involves spoilers, and is not recommended for those who have not seen the movie)
It turned out that although Li Miaomiao's crime was heinous, her daughter Xiao Na was not killed by Li Miaomiao, but died by suicide.
These 17 knives are all stabbing themselves.
In Lao Jin's mouth, his daughter is a very "skinny" child and very obedient.
When he was a child, he had a fever and covered his daughter's face with a cool towel, and her daughter almost suffocated to death and didn't take off the towel.
But in Cortana's recollections, it wasn't that she didn't want to take the towel, but that her father wouldn't let her move.
That towel is called oppression.
When she was a child, Cortana's mother was scolded away by her father, and her cat was also driven away by her father.
Cortana has never experienced two-way love.
In her memory, everyone denied the value of her existence, so much so that even she was unwilling to get along with herself, and finally developed a strong dependent personality.
This is very similar to "The Life of the Disgusted Pine Nut".
is also a life of dislike, Xiao Na and Songzi have a strong dependence on love, and she can give all of other people's kindness, so that after meeting Li Miaomiao, the powerful PUA ability immediately made Li Miaomiao forget herself and burned to him with all her heart.
In the end, in order to please Li Miaomiao's friends, Xiao Na was gang raped by three of his friends and filmed a video, Li Miaomiao was disgusted, and Xiao Na could only prove herself by hurting herself and died in the closet of her childhood.
It turned out that the person who killed Cortana was Lao Jin himself.
His anger is actually psychological compensation for self-blame.
In the end, he let Li Miaomiao go and chose to exile himself.
Only then did I understand who the person in the title of the film was who "waded through the angry sea".
It was never Lao Jin, but Li Miaomiao herself.
The hurt of childhood is not a misery, but a lifetime of dampness, and Cortana points the tip of her knife at herself, looking at her father's corpse and gliding across the sea of anger.
Of course, the "bad guys" were not slashed by Lao Jin, but Lao Jin was the murderer, this anti-climactic design made many people very angry, and "Angry Sea" also suffered a polarized reputation because of this.
But I have to admit that Cao Baoping's style is really bold, and people who like this bite can indeed be refreshing.
Just like me.
In addition to the text, Cao Baoping's personal style is equally wonderful.
The vast scene design, exaggerated lens distortion, and subtle movement perspective are full of a sense of presence, even if you sit in the cinema throughout the whole process, you have a hearty sense of movement after watching it.
In addition, there are long shots of Huang Bo entering the house with a knife, montages of funerals and KTVs, and dragonfly metaphors when Li Miaomiao's father collapsed...
There are many scenes in the movie that have something to offer.
Cortana's Japanese-style youth pain storyline and Lao Jin's bloodthirsty revenge style also play a role in slowing down and complementing each other, and the tribute to Jackie Chan at the comic convention is also very complete, which is completely worthy of being enjoyed by pulling the piece.
There are drawbacks, but there are too many things to boast about.
In short, despite the polarized word-of-mouth of "Angry Sea", I still think that this film is so good that it is definitely one of the top ten of the year.
It's good that Chinese movies have Cao Baoping.
