Trekking Shangri-La Text/President Song
During takeoff and landing, the air pressure usually changes significantly: during takeoff, the air pressure decreases; When landing, the air pressure increases.
However, at Diqing Shangri-La Airport in Yunnan, the pattern is reversed.
As the plane landed, a similar feeling appeared in my ears as at takeoff. Check the barometer, the air pressure displayed is only 0.7 atmospheres, more than 3200 meters above sea level, and the pressure of the aircraft at high altitude just now has 0.8 atmospheres.
High altitude, low pressure, what kind of experience and challenge will it be for mountaineering, hiking, rock climbing and other sports?
Hello everyone, I'm President Song. At a recent event, I had the privilege of participating in a hiking climb at the Archaeopteryx Shangri-La Mountain Class. In the highland area at an altitude of more than 3,000 meters, we have hiked for up to 8 hours, and the cumulative climb height is about 800 meters.
A friend asked me: Why did you go to such a beautiful Shangri-La and have this "masochistic" experience in the deserted rainforest? I'll explain that later.
First, let me introduce the Arc'teryx Archaeopteryx Mountain Class.
▲ Archaeopteryx Mountain Class Shangri-La Store
Since its inception in 2012, ARC'TERYX Academy has been committed to providing professional outdoor training courses for outdoor enthusiasts around the world, including skiing, rock climbing, ice climbing, high-altitude mountaineering, hiking, trail running, and more. Its purpose is to let more people understand and master the basic skills and safety knowledge of outdoor sports through the guidance of professional instructors.
At this Shangri-La event, our group included more than a dozen outdoor enthusiasts from all over the country. A brief briefing was held the day before the activity, and Tony, the leader of this activity in the mountain class, reminded everyone that when you first arrived at high altitude, do not bathe, do not drink alcohol on the first night, and keep enough rest to save physical strength.
▲ Pre-departure meeting/outdoor sharing
Despite its abundance of rainforest vegetation and oxygen, Shangri-La is a gradual adaptation process for first-time arrivals. Only when the body gradually adapts to the high-altitude environment can the appearance of altitude sickness be avoided, especially when engaging in high-intensity mountaineering and hiking.
I tried my best to follow the tour leader's advice, but since I flew to Shangri-La from Beijing, I had a slight headache that night, and although I rested early, my sleep was restless, and the next morning had already arrived.
On the second day, we did a full day of hiking and climbing, and the target location was Diqing Xiaozhongdian Jiuzi Sea. Along the way, there are high mountains and dense tropical primeval forests straddling the grasslands, dotted with cattle and sheep dung of different degrees of wetness and dryness.
The rivers and mountains are picturesque, and for a moment there is a mess under the feet. I stopped and walked along the way, taking pictures and sharing them on social media.
However, this rhythm led to my later experience of significant altitude sickness. When I reached the top of the mountain, my headache worsened and I was even a little dizzy, and I wanted to give up at one point.
A Tibetan leader who accompanied me hurriedly took out Rhodiola rosea and oxygen cylinders for me, and after a brief exchange, one of his words woke me up: "Your rhythm is still wrong, don't stop and go."
"It's okay to slow down, you must have your own rhythm", isn't this what the mountain class leader Tony told before departure? On a whim, he forgot about this stubble, and even shouted into the valley a few times when he was about to reach the top of the mountain.
Walking on the ridges of a primeval forest at high altitude and low pressure, even if there is plenty of oxygen, if you only rely on physical strength and physical fitness, or even fluke, often pay a price.
Later, I also heard that some people arrived at Shangri-La a day or two early for this trip to gradually adapt their bodies to the high altitude environment.
The rhythm is not right, don't stop and go!
OK！ I adjusted my rhythm, increased my breathing rate, allowed my body to take in as much oxygen as possible, and kept my breathing and pace in a harmonious rhythm. Finally, I slowly climbed to the top of the mountain, at which point the barometer showed 0.6 atmospheres and an altitude of more than 4300 meters, and my altitude sickness gradually disappeared.
Thank you very much for the reminders and help of several team leaders, which made me realize how important it is to break through my own inability to do it and have a professional methodology!

The same keeps the rhythm coming down the hill. The whole trip took nearly 8 hours, walked about 20,000 steps, and climbed about 800 meters. We depart at 10 a.m., have lunch on the mountainside at noon, and finally return to the departure point at dusk.
On the way, there is a light rain in the sky from time to time, I have to say that the hard shell of Archaeopteryx is indeed fragrant, there is often rain in the mountains, and during hiking, the hard shell can play a role in wind and rain protection and warmth.
The wild bonfire dinner that night was skipped;
And the constipation caused by eating barley cakes in those days was also omitted (that was too painful...). ）
The next day, it started raining again. The outdoor climbing experience originally scheduled for Xiaozhongdian was changed to an indoor climbing experience (speaking of rock climbing, Archaeopteryx started as a professional climbing equipment). This change did not dampen the enthusiasm for the experience, but provided a unique perspective to observe and learn the basics of rock climbing.
The two-day experience ended quickly, and I did not have any more high reactions.
According to local taxi drivers, Shangri-La locals also feel some discomfort during intense exercise, but they usually perform well in the plains "because they don't really feel tired when running."
The physical strength of the local people is indeed amazing, and when they were resting halfway up the mountain that day, a few Tibetan boys accompanying them actually started a push-up competition! I wanted to participate in it too, but fortunately my teammates stopped it in time, otherwise it may aggravate the high anti-symptoms...
Professional sports not only need professional equipment, but also need to have the corresponding professional knowledge, mountain classroom leader Tony also shared a negative teaching material with us -
Once, an outdoor enthusiast came to Shangri-La for the first time, because he was too excited, he was running around the ancient city of Shangri-La the day before the event, and the result was that he was unconscious. Fortunately, after timely medical attention, he was able to recover a few days later and the event ended.
I can understand the excitement and curiosity of this friend when he first arrived. Back to the friend's question at the beginning of the article: Why did you go to such a beautiful Shangri-La and have this "masochistic" experience in the deserted rainforest?
Shangri-La means "paradise" in Tibetan, the closest place to heaven, and everyone who comes to this place always has a way to heal, whether it is relaxation or indulgence, masochism or self-discipline.
And this shop called Mountain Classroom Bird is a destination for those who love mountain outdoor players to come to Shangri-La, improve outdoor technology, share knowledge and concepts, and meet more fellow practitioners.
The plane took off again, and the air pressure increased again.
Thanks for the mountain class and goodbye Shangri-La.

【Postscript】 Through this trip to Shangri-La, we have a preliminary understanding and understanding of the mountain classroom. As for its knowledge sharing in more specialized fields, it is said that the Archaeopteryx International Climbing Mountain Class will land in Yangshuo, an outdoor resort in China, for the first time. If we have the opportunity, we will meet again in Yangshuo to explore more of the excitement of outdoor life together.
