Incorporating horror movies into the painting is eerie yet unique by Malaysian illustrator Zeen Chin

author:Grassroots in the steppe

A Malaysian illustrator and concept designer, Zeen Chin combines similar styles and themes to create an unusual, eerie yet recognizable art style.

Zeen Chin is from a small town in southern Peninsular Malaysia and was raised by her grandparents.

Behind his house in Kulai, Johor, is a lake where Zeen and his friends used to go fishing. Across the lake is a temple and where they play. During the festival, temple staff put up a projector and a makeshift outdoor screen, and Zeen often sits on a stool brought from home and watches Old Port horror movies with relish. In recent years, the popular illustrator has worked for Applibot, where he is responsible for card illustration and concept design for well-known board games such as Legend of the Cryptids, Galaxy Saga and Kingdom Death, which have gained widespread popularity online. Zeen is well-known, at least in fantasy art circles, but he doesn't indulge in vanity – he just wants to paint. Childhood experiences about temples and horror movies inspired Zeen's theme:

Nostalgia for childhood, Southeast Asian folklore and religion, humor and terror, light and darkness, contrast between good and evil, etc. His style is eerie and disturbing, but it exudes a lively and lovely atmosphere that definitely deserves careful study rather than a cursory glance. You need to look through everyday appearances to unearth something extraordinary, real and unexpected, just like watching a horror movie in a temple.

Growing up, Zeen's parents worked and lived in a city far from home, which was not uncommon at the time. With the help of his mother, Zeen began to be exposed to art. Her mother wasn't a professional artist, but she was enough to teach Zeen some basics. Zeen's paintings were always praised by his family and teachers, and he enjoyed it all, so it wasn't long before art was more than just an amateur pastime. In Zeen's artistic career, the first work that had a major impact on him was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which he thoroughly enjoyed painting. After that, he began to be exposed to Hong Kong horror movies and Japanese anime, and the influence on him is also reflected in his works today. The artist Katsuya Terada's influence on Zeen is huge, and if you can only choose to meet one person, whether alive or dead, it is undoubtedly him. Katsura Terada is also from Japan and specializes in illustrating manga, games, and movies. Zeen once said, "I was fascinated by the creativity he showed in designing his characters and the use of certain elements that were beyond imagination. "When you first start making art independently, it's inevitable to copy the work of other artists. All I can do is study, analyze, and break down Katsuya Terada's artwork. I'm always trying to figure out the elements that really appeal to me. Zeen especially likes the female characters drawn by Katsuya Terada and adding certain "super crazy elements" to avoid falling into clichés or stereotypes. Zeen has always tried to do this when creating figuratively. Because of this, many of his female characters exude a sense of fantasy.
