Apple announced a number of new software features at the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) that cover every aspect of its popular devices, including computers, iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, Apple TVs, AirPods, and the new Apple Vision Pro headset. Many of these new features use artificial intelligence (AI), or "machine learning" (ML), and are in line with Apple's previous promises of user privacy and security, essentially avoiding connecting and transferring user data to the cloud and instead relying on the processing power on the device, what Apple calls a "neural engine."
One of the most exciting features is Persona for Apple Vision Pro. This new augmented reality head-mounted display overlays graphics on the user's real field of view, scanning the user's face with a built-in camera to quickly create a lifelike, interactive digital persona. When a user puts on a device to participate in a FaceTime call or other video conference, a digital human will appear in the user's place in the bulky headset, mapping their expressions and gestures in real time.
In addition, the latest operating system update for the iPhone (iOS 17) introduces an improved autocorrect function, using a "transformer model" to improve autocorrect's word prediction capabilities. iOS 17 also adds "Live Voicemail" to convert voicemails into real-time text, and introduces a presentation mode in FaceTime, allowing users to display an app or computer screen on the screen and display their face or upper body in front of the content, similar to a TV weather host.
Apple also launched a new app called Journal that automatically aggregates a user's recent photos, workouts and other activities through "on-device machine learning" and renders them as incomplete digital log entries, allowing users to edit content and add text and multimedia as needed.
Some other features include personalized volume adjustment, photo recognition of cats and dogs, etc. Overall, Apple showcased many exciting new features at WWDC 2023 that use AI technology to enhance the user experience and protect user privacy.
