Port Moresby; Papua Pichin: Pot Mosbi), located in the Central Province of the Papua Coast, is the capital of Papua New Guinea, with a total land area of 253 square kilometers and a total population of 410,954 (2011).
Shielded by the Irving Stanley Mountains, Port Moresby is surrounded by water on both sides, with Fairfax Bay, a natural harbor, on one side, and a coral-filled sea on the other.
Port Moresby, located on the coast of the Gulf of Papua in the southeast of the island of New Guinea, is the capital of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea. The Motu-Koitabu settled on the land centuries ago, and the first Westerner to visit was Captain John Morsby in 1873, named Port Moresby in honor of the captain's father, Admiral Sir Fairfax Moresby.
