Magical realism is a Latin American school of postmodernist literature that originated in the 30s and 40s of the 20th century and reached its climax in the 60s. On the basis of taking root in national cultural traditions, it draws on the experience of European and American modernist literature, integrates the traditional concepts of Indians, the history of Latin America and the reality of poverty and backwardness, mixes myths and legends, miracles and dreams and other supernatural factors in the storyline, and uses modernist literary symbolic meaning, associative suggestion, time reversal and other expression methods to show a literary world intertwined with magic and reality, so as to express the unique reality of Latin America and explore the fate of the motherland and nation. It has strong local colors and national characteristics. Representative writers are Márquez in Colombia, Asturias in Guatemala, Carpentier in Cuba and Rulfer in Mexico, and Márquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is the most outstanding masterpiece.
