Artificial intelligence allows paralyzed patients to resume walking

The man, Gert-Jan Oskarm, has been paralyzed from the waist down for more than a decade. Swiss scientists implanted a "brain-spine interface" in his body, using an artificial intelligence thinking decoder to interpret the intention signals transmitted by Oskarm's brain, bypassing his injured spine, transmitting to the spinal cord, and then directing the muscles to move accordingly.

Scientists in the field have been building theories about connecting the brain to the spinal cord for decades, but this is the first time they've succeeded in a human patient.

Artificial intelligence played an important role in this, and scientists let AI machine learn Oscarm's intentions and the electrical signals received by the sensors, weeding out useless signals, retaining valid signals, and accurately controlling different parts of the body muscles at a frequency of 300 milliseconds.

In rehabilitation, scientists constantly adjust AI algorithms based on Oscarm's action feedback. Without any surgical treatment, after a few months, Oscar was able to walk easily through steps and ramps. A year later, he can now walk freely around the house, get on and off the bus, and go out for a drink standing in a bar.
