Nishino catches live fossil fish. He started fishing at the age of 3 and has caught 405 species of fish so far. The silver mackerel was caught on May 15, 2023. Nishino uploaded two photos on YouTube (@nanukazame1) with a fish with big eyes. As a "deep-sea fisherman", he challenges world records for the weight of deep-sea fish and Japanese records, while conducting deep-sea surveys targeting rare new species. The silver mackerel is a silver-colored deep-sea fish with green eyes and black fins. Although it has "shark" in its name, it is not one of the great whites, hammerheads, and whale sharks that most people think of when they hear the word "shark".

"While there is information that it is rarely caught, it is not a deep-sea fish that can be targeted. Because it lives alone and has no fixed place, it does not know when it is. It is also a prized deep-sea fish – sometimes described as ancient fish or living fossilized marine fish. "Nishino has been working on catching this fish for years. The dream finally came true on May 15 at a depth of 200 meters in Sagami Bay, Kanagawa Prefecture. Nishino said: "When the silver mackerel surfaced, I pulled it to the boat while nervously wondering if the hook had been swallowed.

"Because the silver mackerel has strong teeth that even shellfish and crustaceans can crush, if you swallow a needle, you are likely to be cut off. And most importantly, it's beautiful. ”

The captured silver mackerel became the footage for a fish commentary video posted on YouTube by Mr. Nishino's father, Kei, who is also a Japanese record judge for the Japan Fishing Association (JGFA), which manages Japanese fishing records. After observing and taking pictures, it was processed into food, and it was said that he planned to eat hot pot. The silver mackerel caught by Mr. Nishino is 70 centimeters long and weighs 1.8 kilograms. Since it was captured according to international rules, plans are currently underway to apply for the Japan Fishing Association and the International Fishing Association for the Japanese record and the world record for weight.
