Court documents filed Monday show that the U.S. Virgin Islands has issued a subpoena to Tesla CEO Elon Musk to provide documents to help investigate JPMorgan's relationship with the late American billionaire Jeffrey Epstein.
Musk's subpoena is part of a civil lawsuit filed by the U.S. Virgin Islands against JPMorgan. The U.S. Virgin Islands alleges that JPMorgan Chase and Sister intentionally benefited from Epstein's trafficking of young women to the U.S. Virgin Islands for sex trafficking. This follows several other billionaires, including Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who also received subpoenas from the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The U.S. Virgin Islands civil lawsuit alleges JPMorgan Chase received high-value business opportunities from Epstein but turned a blind eye to his activities. JPMorgan said it was unaware of Epstein's alleged crimes and could not be held accountable.
The U.S. Virgin Islands said in court documents that they wanted information from Musk because they believed Musk was "a high net worth individual and Epstein may have introduced or attempted to introduce Musk to JPMorgan as a client."
The subpoena requires Musk to provide documents reflecting communications or meetings between Musk and JPMorgan Chase or between Musk and Epstein related to the accounts of the two at JPMorgan. It also asked Musk to provide any documents related to "Epstein's involvement in human trafficking" or documents related to Musk's payments to Epstein or JPMorgan in connection with his account with JPMorgan.
However, something went wrong with the delivery of this subpoena. The U.S. Virgin Islands on Monday asked the judge in charge of the case to authorize other means to serve Musk's April 28 summons. They said they made sincere efforts, including hiring private investigators, to obtain Musk's address, but were never able to find it. They also tried to send Musk's subpoena to Tesla's office and asked for permission to send the subpoena directly to Tesla.
It's unclear how much business Musk does with JPMorgan. Musk's relationship with JPMorgan Chase is not good. In 2021, JPMorgan Chase sued Tesla, accusing the latter of violating a warrant agreement signed with it and claiming $162 million. The expansion of Musk's business empire is more dependent on other banks.
According to previous media reports, Epstein has a residence in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and he opened an account with JPMorgan Chase for many years until JPMorgan Chase closed his account in 2013. But years later, JPMorgan bankers were still meeting with him. In 2019, Epstein died in prison while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
