Carbon: Pulsed line discharge single process for graphene oxide defect repair and reduction

Defect repair and reduction of graphene oxide (GO) is a key determinant for expanding the commercial application of GO. In this paper, a method for effective repair of defects by pulse line discharge (PWD) process in GO dispersion solution in organic solvents is proposed. The energy generated during an electric explosion enables organic solvents to act as carbon precursors, simultaneously reducing and repairing defects in a process. To investigate the reduction efficiency and performance changes caused by structural recovery of solution-based PWD methods, explosion control was performed using two different conductive media such as copper wire and carbon fiber. Copper wire, as a very effective conductive medium for reducing GO, results in a very low oxygen content in the reduced GO, less than 1%, while carbon fiber produces non-metallic contaminated reduced graphene oxide (rGO), which exhibits excellent electrical conductivity. The conductivity results of the prepared rGO powder showed that carbon fiber showed higher conductivity (2057.6S/m) under the same density of 0.5g/cc.
