1. Basic overview
Tourism is an important part of Liberia's economy. Liberia is a country located on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, with a total land area of 111,370 square kilometers (43,000 square miles) and a total coastline of 579 kilometers (359.8 miles). More than half of Liberia's inhabitants (53 per cent) live in cities. The country has many natural attractions that attract tourists from all over the world. Liberia's tourism industry has great potential to create jobs, generate income and support the country's economic growth.
Tourism is an important source of income for Liberia and contributes significantly to the country's gross domestic product (GDP). According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism's total contribution to Liberia's GDP in 2019 was 9.7%, totalling $641.3 million. In addition to direct contributions, the industry also generates indirect economic benefits, such as job creation in other sectors such as retail, transportation and hospitality.
Tourism in Liberia
Tourism in Liberia focuses on nature tourism. The country is rich in flora and fauna, including unique species such as hippos, chimpanzees, and rare birds. Liberia's pristine beaches, waterfalls, and national parks are some of the country's most attractive tourist attractions. Sapo National Park, for example, is home to many wildlife species, including elephants, leopards, and various primates.
Liberia is rich in natural resources, including forests, rivers, oceans, waterfalls, hills, mountains, lagoons, lakes, wetlands, and deltas, providing the country with a potential tourism and hospitality market. Ecotourism and cultural heritage in Liberia
Despite the effects of war and pandemics, Liberia offers us many landscapes, including a unique culture and history that attracts people from all over the globe. A prime example is Providence, which demonstrates Liberia's rich cultural heritage and its resilience as a West African nation.
For example, visitors to Providence can see many historical sites, such as one of the oldest cotton trees in the world, an ancient well, and a landing pier for trade. The first concrete project in Liberia's history can also be seen on the island. These cultural and historical sites offer visitors a unique opportunity to experience and learn about Liberia's rich cultural heritage.
On December 18, 2022, hundreds of people celebrated Liberian tourism on the premises of the City of Paynesville Corporation (PCC), the country's first-ever annual National Tourism Festival. The festival takes place at the beginning of Liberia's peak tourist season, and from December to May, the day brings together local Liberians, foreigners, Liberians and international visitors.
Liberia's shopping and food vendors showcase the country's fashion, including jewelry, home décor, snacks, beverages, body care products and more. This is one of the best ways to showcase Liberia's rich culture and creativity.
The Government of Liberia recognizes the importance of tourism and is implementing policies to promote the industry. The government is investing in infrastructure. For example, new roads and airports had been built to connect tourist destinations, and measures had been implemented to attract foreign investors to develop tourism.
The Government of Liberia is also actively promoting sustainable tourism to protect the country's natural resources. The government has implemented regulations prohibiting illegal hunting and fishing of wild animals in national parks. Ecotourism is also promoted to attract tourists who are interested in experiencing Liberia's natural beauty.
4. Cultural traditions
Traveling in Liberia, tourists can experience the country's rich cultural traditions, including its traditional dances. Dance is an integral part of Liberian culture and performances take place on special occasions such as weddings, funerals, festivals and traditional events, as well as spontaneous street performances. Traditional dances vary from tribe to tribe and region, but they are accompanied by drums (samba), which often entices spectators to pause their daily activities to watch. Dancers usually wear traditional costumes, and it is also a common practice to "paint their faces" before a performance. This form of cultural expression has brought great joy to the Liberian people and is a testament to their passion for their cultural heritage.
