Oregon Coast Aquarium

A Newport landmark, the Oregon Coast Aquarium is a public aquatic and marine science exhibit facility that offers educational programs. Exhibits showcase seabirds, marine mammals, fish, invertebrates, and plants primarily native to the Oregon Coast. The Rocky Shores provide habitat for fearsome but mild-looking wolf eels, groupers, and a variety of starfish, cap shells, and other invertebrates. At the heart of this gallery is the touch pool, allowing visitors to gently interact with tide pool dwellers such as starfish, anemones, abalone, and crabs. The coastal waters are home to sea moon jellyfish, Pacific sea nettles, and California seaweed forests. Deep Sea Passage is a 1.32 million-gallon exhibit showcasing three expansive marine habitats connected by a series of tunnels that extend underwater, creating the feeling of walking on the ocean floor. Visitors can experience 3,500 marine life landscapes in nearly 360 degrees. The exhibit is designed to allow guests to view the ever-changing underwater landscape, from Oregon's rocky coastline to the high seas environment far from shore.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium operates a large outdoor area that includes seabirds. I usually like the squeak of freedom, and here I stood for more than half an hour, watching the animals. The rhinoceros auk looks like a little grandfather. I've never seen a bird like this before.
