Saudi Arabia and Thailand, two countries that can be said to be incapable of fighting, how can they cut off diplomatic relations for 30 years without a conflict of national interests?
Saudi Arabia relies on oil to leapfrog from a barren desert region to the richest country in the world. With an average of 7 million to nearly 8 million barrels of oil exported per day, Saudi royals earn 1.6 billion yuan a day in bed.

In 1989, a Thai laborer named Jangkole was in debt because he was addicted to gambling, and in order to pay it back, he started stealing.
He had previously worked as a servant in the home of a Saudi prince and was familiar with the Saudi prince's home. It just so happened that the prince took the whole family on vacation abroad, and taking advantage of this opportunity, he sneaked into the prince's house, swept away the prince's jewels, and then absconded back to Thailand, relying on the sale of the jewelry to achieve wealth freedom.
When the Saudi prince returned home, he found that his home had been ransacked, and after liquidation, about 30 kilograms of jewelry was stolen. The prince is enraged, and after a police investigation, he discovers that the criminals have absconded back to Thailand. Saudi officials immediately contacted Thailand and asked Thailand to apprehend the thief. After the Thai police learned about it, they were also very cooperative and quickly arrested Jiang Kolai.

The people caught it, and chased back some of the stolen jewelry. Originally, the two countries worked together to solve a transnational theft case, but what happened afterwards made Saudi Arabia very angry, and even did not hesitate to cut off diplomatic relations with Thailand.

At this point, Saudi officials determined that the Thai military and royal family probably stole the jewels. Not only that, but Saudi Arabia also warned its citizens to be careful of traveling to Thailand, and Saudis rarely travel to Thailand. Thailand lost at least $14 billion in foreign and other income over three years because of the theft of jewelry, a figure that is much more than the value of the stolen jewelry.

Only recently did relations between the two sides improve slightly. The first sentence of the joint communiqué issued by Saudi Arabia is to affirm Thailand's efforts in investigating the jewelry case, and hopes that Thailand will further help Saudi Arabia find criminals in the future. Most of the stolen jewelry has not been heard from and its whereabouts are unknown.
