Macau (Portuguese Macau, English Macao), referred to as "Macao", full name Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is located in southern China, on the west bank of the Pearl River Delta. It is bordered by Gongbei of Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province to the north, Wan Chai and Hengqin of Zhuhai City to the west, and Hong Kong and Shenzhen to the east. It is 60 kilometers away and borders the South China Sea to the south. It consists of the Macau Peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane, with a total land area of 33 square kilometers (as of September 2021)[35] and a total population of 682,300 (as of the third quarter of 2021). In 1553, the Portuguese acquired the right of residence in Macau, and on December 1, 1887, Portugal officially occupied Macau through the formalities of diplomatic documents. On 20 December 1999, the Chinese Government resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Macau. After more than 100 years of collision between Eastern and Western cultures, Macao has become a city with a unique style, leaving behind a large number of historical and cultural sites. The Historic Centre of Macao was officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 15, 2005.

Macau is an international free port and world center of tourism and leisure, one of the most densely populated areas in the world, and one of the four largest gambling cities in the world, with a capitalist system. Its renowned light industry, tourism, hospitality and casino have made Macau one of the most developed and affluent regions in the world. In 2017, Macao's GDP recorded MOP404.20 billion.
On 7 August 2020, Macao became an official member city of the World Heritage Cities Organization. [26]
