Luo Dayou "Homecoming, Eight Two Gold"

Generally, this OST is called "Homecoming", ignoring that "Homecoming" is followed by "Eight Taels of Gold". In fact, when the movie was released, "Eight Taels of Gold" was the name of the Hong Kong version, and the English name of the movie was "Eight Taels of Gold", which is the literal translation of "Eight Taels of Gold". But then again, the record released in the form of OST is indeed a Taiwanese version of "Homecoming", the name is more fresh and vulgar.

"Eight Two Golds" is the last part of Hong Kong director Zhang Wanting's "immigration trilogy", because the script involves some scenes in the mainland, so the crew at that time also went north to the mainland for filming, and finally was stopped due to special events and had to withdraw back to Hong Kong. After Zhang Wanting's argument, the relevant departments agreed that the crew would return to the mainland for filming, but it must be completed within nine days.

During the filming in the mainland, Zhang Wanting once had strong negative emotions, and the words of a mainland extras in the crew at that time made her regain her confidence. The speech was, "Don't give up, your movies can make us smarter."

The film tells the story of immigration, but also a period of nostalgia in a special period, and now it seems that many scenes have become part of history.

In 1990, "Eight Two Golds" won a total of eight nominations for the 9th "Hong Kong Film Awards", of which the final winner was "Best Film Score".

Those who have seen "Eight Two Golds" will have a deeper feeling for the music, after all, there is a picture blessing. For example, those who have seen the movie, when they hear "Boat Song", most of them will re-recall the haunting melody at the end of the movie, where there is impermanence and there are vicissitudes.

Even if you haven't seen the movie, "Homecoming" is also a good album, like an ink splash of Ambient, you can hear the taste of landscape, roots and nostalgia.

"Homecoming" is also an important Oriental music experiment during the period when Lo Dayou moved to Hong Kong and founded the "Music Factory". Unlike most of his albums during his time in Hong Kong, which were written by Hua Biao, the collaborator of "Homecoming" is Lu Shijie.

Lu Shijie's music career is mainly based on soundtracks, such as "Angel Action", "Two Houses and One Wife", "Zhongyi Qunying", "Stormy Years", etc., are all his works. The latter two parts are also the soundtrack works that Lu Shijie and Luo Dayou co-collaborated and signed.

Although during Luo Dayou's time in Hong Kong, many people always focused on the songs he wrote for others, the songs he composed himself, and the singers he signed, and the series of compilations of "Music Factory", but in fact, during this period in Hong Kong, Luo Dayou did a lot of film soundtracks, in addition to "Zhongyi Qunying", "Stormy Years", "Eight Two Gold", there are also film soundtracks such as "Heavenly Love", "Alang's Story" and so on, Luo Dayou also participated.

On the one hand, this is the source of income for Luo Dayou to open a "music factory" that year, on the other hand, it actually allows him to continue the oriental style proposition of "Sea Flower" through the creation of works such as "Boat Song" and "Heavenly Love", and is connected with his own album "Comrade Lover", achieving a stage of common aesthetic system.

The "Comrade Lover" album, which came out a year earlier than "Homecoming", was also co-produced by Luo Dayou and Lu Shijie.

Now listening to "Homecoming", the worst point is that at that time at the production level, it was mainly completed by computer engineering, whether it was percussion or many silk and bamboo instruments, they were simulated with computer timbre, so it didn't sound real enough, if it was changed to the production of the mainland now, it would definitely use a professional folk band to complete these songs, and the texture would be further improved.

The reason why Luo Dayou did this at that time, I judged that in addition to cost considerations, it was also related to the mainstreaming of MIDI in the production circle at that time. And the use of MIDI to simulate oriental atmosphere scenes may itself be a new creation for producers, at least in the process of timbre selection and use, which requires a certain degree of innovation.

The most out-of-the-loop album is, of course, "Boat Song", which is also another classic "Boat Song" in the Chinese music scene after Teresa Teng's "Boat Song".

Personally, I feel that the melody of this boat song should be the result of Luo Dayou's folk style, and I see that someone mentioned that the melody of this song comes from folk songs in southern Jiangsu, you can retain this view.

It is said that "Boat Song" was first sung to the movie heroine Zhang Aijia, but it was later changed to Qi Yu, and it can only be said that this change belongs to "Shanmo Dayan".

In addition to the interpretation of the fairy sister Qi Yu, the Chinese drums simulated by this song, as well as the writing and singing of harmony, are also the key to the success of the work, making the work not only sound fairy, but also have a kind of power.

No guitar, no bass, no drums, relying on harmony and some special timbre and instruments to complete the arrangement, which was also an important part of Luo Dayou's oriental style experiment at that time.

In addition to "Boat Song", another vocal work on the album is "Legend" sung by Luo Dayou himself, this song has many paragraphs, all using simulated guzheng sound, if recorded with real instruments, the effect may be better.

I have the impression that the CD "Homecoming" mainly has the early Toshiba 1M, then the K1, and then the mid-priced version, at that time there was still a batch of pirated copies of special boxes in China, that is, there was a bulge on the front of the CD case, and a large piece in the middle was dented, and now even this pirated copy has people who dare to sell more than two hundred.

Du Daxiong's cover design is really good-looking.
