[How far is Taiwan from "zero diplomatic relations"? Biden urgently sent a special envoy to Honduras to help Tsai Ing-wen put out the fire]

Honduras, a Central American country that has "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan, recently announced that it seeks to establish formal diplomatic relations with Chinese mainland. The US State Department announced on the 16th that Chris Dodd, President Biden's special adviser on Americas, will visit Panama and Honduras from the 17th to the 21st of this month. The White House clearly wants to help Tsai Ing-wen put out the fire, but the United States is on the verge of another financial tsunami at the moment, and it is difficult to protect itself, how can it save the Taiwan authorities? If Honduras establishes diplomatic relations with Chinese mainland, Taiwan will only have 13 "diplomatic relations", who will be next? How far is Taiwan from "zero diplomatic relations"?

Honduran President Hilmara Castro announced on Twitter on the 14th that he had instructed his foreign minister to seek diplomatic relations with Chinese mainland.

Honduran Foreign Minister Eduardo Reina said in an interview with the media on Wednesday (15th) that 181 countries around the world have diplomatic relations with China, and economic reality prompts Hongguo "to make this decision." He revealed that Taiwan refuses to increase the amount of aid on top of the $50 million per year.

Reina said Honduras' need for energy, social policies and debt servicing was "flooding the country." Hongguo has already repaid $2.2 billion in debt last year and still has to pay $2.3 billion this year to complete the repayment of domestic and foreign debts worth a total of $20 billion. Mr. Reyina said that Hong had asked Taiwan to double its annual aid of $50 million and study "realigning" the $600 million debt that Hong Guo owed to Taiwan, but Taiwan did not respond positively.

At present, Taiwan has 14 "diplomatic relations", including Nauru, Palau, Tuvalu, Marshall Islands, Belize, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Paraguay, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Eswatini, and the Vatican.

After Tsai Ing-wen came to power, she did not recognize the "consensus of '92" and cooperated with the United States in playing the "Taiwan card", which led to cross-strait relations falling into a trough and even tensions, and Taipei also faced one tide after another to break off diplomatic relations. The last country to sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan was Nicaragua, which announced on December 10, 2021, that it had severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan and issued a statement that it recognized only "one China." The outside world is concerned, who is the next country to break off diplomatic relations with Taiwan? How far is Taiwan from "zero diplomatic relations"?
