Why is eating sugar cane poisoned?

Sugarcane is generally harvested and marketed around the Mid-Autumn Festival every year, and is not sold until around Qingming the following year.

The temperature in spring is rising, mold and other miscellaneous bacteria are suitable for growth and reproduction, and sugarcane is easy to mildew; Mildewy sugarcane has the risk of producing toxins, so the annual sugarcane poisoning events are more common in early spring, and February to March is the peak period.

It is not the sugarcane itself that poisons the snake, but the moldy and discolored "red heart" or "black heart" sugar cane.

It is worth noting that as long as sugarcane mold, whether around the Qingming Festival or other seasons, it will also cause poisoning.

Can eating moldy sugarcane poisoning kill you?

Sugarcane mold produces a neurotoxin, which is a toxic metabolite 3-nitropropionic acid produced by a few species such as Penicillium and Aspergillus. After entering the human body, it is absorbed, and the onset is acute, generally ten minutes to more than ten hours.

Cause damage to the central nervous system in a short period of time, resulting in cerebral edema, headache, severe convulsions, stiff limbs and feet like chicken feet, and dilated pupils; Severe cases can lead to ischemia, respiratory failure and death. There are also some patients who are poisoned by sugarcane toxin and leave sequelae such as speech and movement disorders.

Can you still eat it after chopping off the moldy part of the sugar cane?

Soft, discolored, wine-flavored, hairy, red heart sugar cane is not recommended to eat.

Many people think that it is no problem to cut off the moldy part of the sugar cane and eat the remaining sugar cane. In fact, this is a fatal misunderstanding. After the bacteria invade the sugar cane, the hyphae can be extended, and even if the moldy part is cut off, the remaining sugar cane has a large number of toxins that are invisible to the naked eye.

Can sugarcane juice still be drunk? If sugarcane mold, it is possible to produce toxins, and such sugarcane juice may contain higher amounts of toxins, and the risk of poisoning is greater. Therefore, the squeezed "finished sugarcane juice" is best not to drink. Of course, if it is fresh sugarcane without mold, it is no problem to buy freshly squeezed sugarcane juice.

How to choose good sugar cane?

Look at the appearance and the central part: the sugar cane with black skin with red, smooth and white frost is relatively fresh. If the color of the sugarcane is poor, flocculent or hairy white substance appears at the end, and if there are reddish yellow, tan, or blue-black spots and patches on the cut section, it means that it has mildew, such sugarcane do not buy!

Touch hardness: fresh sugarcane has a hard texture, mildew sugarcane has a soft texture. If the texture is relatively soft sugar cane, then pay attention.

Identify whether there is a peculiar smell: the cane juice squeezed from normal sugarcane is sweet and refreshing, with the unique fragrance of sugarcane, if you smell sour musty smell or lees smell and other peculiar smells, it means that it has deteriorated, such sugarcane can not be edible.
