The vast Amazon biome covers 2.6 million square miles, twice the size of India, stores vast amounts of carbon and supports about 10% of known plant and animal species on Earth.
The Amazon River discharges more water than any other river on Earth, and almost 20% of all water flowing into the ocean flows through the Amazon basin first. While nearly two-thirds of the Amazon basin is in Brazil, it spans seven other countries, from the Andes to the Atlantic Ocean.
