The Independent State of Papua New Guinea, abbreviated as Papua New Guinea and Papua New Guinea. Between 141° and 160° east longitude, between the equator and 12° south latitude, southwestern Pacific.

Bordered by the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya to the west and Australia by the Torres Strait to the south, it is part of the Melanesian archipelago.

Internal self-government was introduced on 1 December 1973.

Independence on 16 September 1975, with Michael Somare as the first Prime Minister.
