In the 18th century, the Spanish physician and botanist Masdevall discovered plants of the genus Tricuspid.
In 1840, the genus Tricuspid began to be introduced for cultivation.
In 1847, the tripointed orchid orchid of the genus Tricuspid was introduced by Germany (Masd. Tovarensis) first bloomed in Berlin.
Tricuspid orchids are small evergreen clumpy epiphytes, a few petroglytic or terrestrial. It is often located on 2500~4000m moist tree trunks, branches or mossy wet rocks, and a few grow on the land of shady forests.
There are about 340~350 native species in the genus, distributed from Mexico to Brazil and tropical South America. Most of these are found in the Andes of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in high-altitude forests.
There are currently multiple hybrid horticultural varieties.
