Day 3️⃣

From tapir to macaw Watch a day of eating soil

Watch tapir lick clay at night and return to your eco-hotel early in the morning. Depart again before dawn, from there follow the river to the largest parrot-licking clay show site in Manu National Park, where macaw licking clay starts at approximately 5:30 AM.

At dawn, medium-sized parrots land on treetops above the licking clay spot, arguing one-on-one. Hundreds of screaming little parrots crawl around on the branches, ready to land on the riverbank, and around 7:00 to 7:30 in the morning, a series of green, blue and red macaws begin to arrive, hovering over the clay rock, and after about 40 to 100 macaws gather and think it safe near the licking clay spot, the parrots begin to land on the clay rock to eat the soil, this colorful, noisy scene will last 20 to 40 minutes, or until the parrot is full of clay, Either interrupted by the presence of bald eagles or jaguars, 80 to 100 macaws and 600 or more other parrots feast here, making it a great wildlife spectacle. After the quirky birding content, head up the river back to the Tapir Lodge.
