The Diego Garcia base has three points worth paying attention to: stationing U.S. military maritime prepositioned forces, home ports to support submarine operations, and strategic bomber takeoff and landing bases.

Diego Garcia is the southernmost of the Chagos Archipelago in the central Indian Ocean and is the largest of the archipelagos.

The island is located in the heart of the Indian Ocean.

to the east it borders the Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Java;

To the north are India and Sri Lanka, across the Arabian Sea from Pakistan, Iran and other countries;

To the northwest is the Arabian Peninsula, overlooking the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and Arab countries;

To the west is the African continent, across the sea from Tanzania and Kenya;

To the southwest is Madagascar;

To the southeast is Australia.

The island's location is almost in the middle of the above-mentioned places, which is a key point of maritime and air traffic in the Indian Ocean, and is a necessary place for many international routes between Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania, and is strategically important.

In 1971, the U.S. military stationed on the island, and the island has since been used as an important base for the U.S. military.

After years of construction by the US military, the base can berth nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers, can repair various types of ships, and has the ability to support the activities of US aircraft carrier battle groups, amphibious landing formations, cruise missile nuclear submarines and strategic bombers in the Indian Ocean, which is enough to control the entire Indian Ocean.

The Strait of Malacca, the Strait of Pok, the southern route of Sri Lanka, the Arabian Sea, the Gulf of Aden and other strategic choke areas are all within the range of strategic bombers at the Diego Garcia base.

At the same time, the US military has pre-stocked some important strategic and campaign materials in Diego Garcia, and in the event of a conflict around the Indian Ocean, the US military can immediately put these into combat use.

The base can effectively support U.S. military operations in the Pacific, Central and African theaters.

Over the years, the United States and the British government have signed a series of agreements on the status and use of Diego Garcia, ensuring the political stability of the base;

On the one hand, construction is stepping up on the island, expanding ports, airports, logistics facilities, etc.

At present, the base mainly provides the following 3 functions:

First, prepositioning troops at sea.

In Diego Garcia is stationed the U.S. military's maritime prepositioned unit, which is subordinate to the U.S. Military Sealift Command.

Maritime prepositioning is a key component of U.S. Navy maritime bases.

It places strategic bases for military equipment and supplies on ships in key sea areas so that troops can quickly obtain them when fighting in theaters, conducting humanitarian operations, or dealing with other contingencies.

Prepositioned ships allow the rapid and efficient flow of military supplies in areas of operations that cannot rely on other countries' transportation networks, ensuring that U.S. forces can get the supplies they need, anywhere, anytime, to respond quickly in a crisis.

The prepositioned forces at Diego Garcia mainly consisted of the 2nd Squadron of the Marine Prepositioned Fleet and the 3rd Army Prepositioned Reserve Flotilla supporting the Marine Corps.

These pre-positioned ships, along with their stockpiles, played a huge role in the 1991 Gulf War, the 2003 Iraq War, and the 2001-present war in Afghanistan.

Second, support submarine operations.

Diego Garcia is also used by the U.S. military as a support submarine operation, can berth cruise missile nuclear submarines, provide them with certain maintenance services, and serves as the home port of the submarine supply ship "Emory Rand".

Cruise missile nuclear submarines have conventional strike capabilities using Tomahawk cruise missiles, as well as special forces combat capabilities.

One cruise missile nuclear submarine can carry up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, which is equivalent to the cruise missile attack capability of 12 modified Los Angeles-class nuclear submarines.

Two missile tubes on board were replaced with a pocket submarine known as the Advanced SEAL Transport System or a dock bunker equipped with SEAL delivery vehicles.

Each cruise missile submarine can carry 66 SEALs or special operations personnel to perform a variety of military missions.

The USS Emory Rand is one of two active U.S. submarine supply ships stationed in Diego Garcia in 2010.

The ship is capable of undertaking the repair and supply of U.S. submarines in the area, as well as surface ships.

Thirdly, strategic bomber take-off and landing bases.

Diego Garcia's runway is about 3,658 meters long, which can take off and land any aircraft of the US Air Force, and the apron area is 370,000 square meters, which can accommodate more than 100 fighter aircraft.

Diego Garcia has played a major role in U.S. military operations and contingency operations.

During the 1991 Gulf War, more than six hundred B-52s flew from here.

Subsequently, it also played an important role in the US strike on Iraq.

In particular, in Operation Enduring Freedom, Diego Garcia's role is even more prominent.

Throughout the war, B-1 and B-52 bombers flying from Diego Garcia dropped 65 percent of the total number of bombs.

From 2001 to 2006, Diego Garcia deployed long-range bombers such as B52, B1 and B2, which has been the main base for strategic bombing of Afghanistan and Iraq.

The island is also an important transit base for the Air Force, where strategic bomber pilots can rest and refuel their aircraft after completing their missions in the nearby area, before returning home to the base.

From this point of view, Diego Garcia is an important part of the US Strategic Command's global strike concept.

In addition, Diego Garcia is also deployed with an optoelectronic space detection system and GPS monitoring station, which can track and control satellites;

It has a communication station that can broadcast combat information to combat units in the vicinity area, and also has a signal intelligence function, which can monitor and intercept communications throughout the Indian Ocean coastal area;

As well as high-frequency global stations, hydrophone stations, military prisons, etc.

@柒遇长安, see the essence through the phenomenon.

Diego Garcia is an important base of the US military in the Indian Ocean, which is not only a support submarine operating base and a strategic bomber base, but also the main logistics support center of the US Navy in the Indian Ocean, which can effectively support the US military's operations in the Indian Ocean and surrounding areas. #My Treasure Author# #History Talk#
