Tang dynasty painted clay figurines of working women unearthed from Tomb No. 201 in Astana

In 1972, a group of working women's figurines were unearthed in Tomb No. 201 of the Astana Ancient Tomb Group in Turpan, Xinjiang, with a total of four clay figurines, 9.7 cm to 16 cm high, all of which were painted with clay sculptures. The owner of the tomb was the mother of Zhang Junxing, a wealthy family of Gaochang, who died in the fifth year of Emperor Gaozong of Tang (674 AD) and was buried five miles northwest of Gaochang City. Although it has lasted for thousands of years, thanks to the dry climate and special geographical environment of the Turpan region, this group of mud figurines has finally been completely preserved. Therefore, you can clearly see the whole process from grain to pancakes in the Tang Dynasty, which is full of a strong atmosphere of life.

The clay figurines are all female, with a high hair comb, white lead powder on the face, and dotted flowers on the forehead. She wears a narrow-sleeved shirt with a half-arm shirt and a long skirt on the floor.

The figurines depicting the images of working women and the details of production in groups are rare material materials for the study of ancient social life, sculpture art and food culture in Xinjiang.
