Western Han gilded rabbit copper staff head

This gilded rabbit bronze staff head was unearthed in 1955 in Tomb No. 1 of the Shizhaishan Ancient Tomb Group in Jinning. The shape is of a rabbit crouched on a copper drum, and the feet of the drum extend downward into a cylindrical hammer to fit into the wooden staff. This rabbit is thin but not weak, with beautiful muscles and looks strong and powerful. His eyes are round, his long ears are open vertically, his tail is upturned, his expression is nervous, and he looks like he is ready to get up and avoid danger. Although this cultural relic is relatively simple in shape, the rabbit has a looming pattern all over the body, which seems to have been specially decorated, gilded all over (most of the gilt has fallen off at present), and the four-legged toes are clearly visible, which is a small but fine piece.

Some scholars have verified that tomb No. 1, where this cultural relic was unearthed, is the tomb of a generation of Dian queens. Why did Queen Dian choose to use the image of "rabbit" as a staff? It is speculated that the Dian people are a settled rice-growing people, and the theme of the sacrifice activities is often to seek smooth winds and rain, abundant grains, and prosperity of six animals, and the strong fertility of rabbits has long penetrated into the hearts of the Dian people. From this small cane, we can see the Dian people's love and worship of rabbits, and their expectations for population reproduction and social prosperity.

Western Han rabbit lacquered wooden pot

This lacquered wooden pot was unearthed in Tomb No. 113 of Yangfutou Cemetery in Kunming, with a diameter of 10 cm and a residual height of 22 cm, which should be a wine vessel. The lacquered wooden pot has a straight mouth, a drum belly, a flat bottom, and a black lacquer base on the body, painted with red mesh patterns, amoeba patterns, standing and walking rabbit patterns and other combination patterns.

Lacquer ware was a luxury item during the Warring States Qin and Han dynasties, and was only available to a very small number of upper-class people. At the same time, because most lacquerware is organic matter, it is extremely difficult to preserve in the acidic soil of Yunnan, so lacquerware is rare in Dian cultural relics. The most refined lacquerware produced is the Yangfutou cemetery, and the lacquerware of the Yangfutou cemetery is concentrated in tomb 113, with a large variety. This lacquered wood pot is well preserved and is rare among lacquerware unearthed in the Yunnan region.
