Apple's Apple Watch new patent revamps the digital crown: laser sensor to improve accuracy

IT House January 22 news, the United States Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) published this Thursday list, Apple obtained a new patent on Apple Watch. The patent shows that Apple plans to use a laser rotation sensor for the Apple Watch digital crown, which provides more reliable and accurate rotation sensing and can reduce or eliminate the need for grooves in the crown.

IT House learned from the patent that by configuring a laser rotation sensor, Apple Watch can determine the speed and direction of the rotational movement of the sensed surface based on the signal.

The laser rotation sensor can detect the laser beam, reflected light and other light sources, the laser module can be a vertical cavity surface emitting laser, the vertical cavity surface emitting laser can detect the frequency difference between the emitted laser beam and the reflected part of the laser beam, and the signal can be at least partially based on the difference in frequency.

Apple wrote in the patent that the crown can rotate the input, and users can implement spins, twists, turn and other ways to rotate the crown. For example, the rotation input can modify the graphical display of the device, scroll through lists, select or move graphical objects, move the cursor between objects on the display, and so on, depending on the direction of rotation of the crown. The crown can also accept a pan input, with the user pushing or pressing the end of the crown.

In some cases, the crown can also act as a point of contact for a device's sensors, such as biometric sensors. For example, a smart watch may include a heart rate sensor, an electrocardiogram sensor, a thermometer, a photoplethysmography sensor, a fingerprint sensor, etc., which can detect the user's various physiological functions.

The crown can include external components such as electrodes that the user can touch to activate the biometric sensor for detection. In some cases, electrical signals can be transmitted via the crown to the internal sensor via the crown limit and/or via the crown's conductive path.
