According to Reuters on January 17, scientists in the Chilean Patagonia region of South America are excavating dinosaur fossils from the southernmost point of the world (except Antarctica), including giant raptor fossils and feathered dinosaur fossils.

According to the South American Journal of Geosciences, Megaraptor was a carnivorous dinosaur that lived in parts of South America during the Cretaceous period, about 70 million years ago, and may have been at the top of the region's food chain before the dinosaur mass extinction. The body found this time is 10 meters long.

The fossils were found between 2016 and 2020 in Chile's southernmost Zinas River Valley, and also include some unusual fossils of half-bird velociraptors, most likely covered in feathers.

Jared, a researcher at the University of Chile, said the fossils were different from those found in Argentina or Brazil in the past, and had some different characteristics. "It could be a new species, or it could belong to another new family closely related to dinosaurs in other parts of South America." But more hard evidence is needed, he said.

The studies also shed further light on how meteorites struck Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula about 65 million years ago, which may have triggered the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Marcelo Lepe, director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute, said that the Patagonia region now has a strong cold wave that lasts for thousands of years, and the temperature drops sharply, which is in stark contrast to the extreme warm climate that prevailed during the Cretaceous period.

"The dramatic changes in the environment have also led to the diversity of species." Leppe said the rocks in the Zinas Valley also prove that the world was in crisis before the meteorite hit Earth.
