Kosovo is independent, conflicts are constant, can a weak President Vučić resolve the Serbian crisis?

author:Historical micro-guides

When it comes to Serbian President Vučić, many people's first impression is of the aggrieved president sitting at Trump's desk at the White House and placing a nearly 2-meter-tall body on a small chair.

The hat of "the weakest president" has since been buttoned on the head of Serbian President Vučić.

Kosovo is independent, conflicts are constant, can a weak President Vučić resolve the Serbian crisis?

At the end of 2022, Serbia was on the hot search again because of the conflict with Kosovo.

Since 10 December, Serbs in northern Kosovo have set up roadblocks and blocked roads in protest against the arrest of a Serb police officer by the Kosovo authorities.

That night and the following morning, there was an exchange of fire, in which Serbian President Vučić said that December 11 was the most difficult day since he became president, and declared that Serbia had been "driven into a corner".

While there was speculation about whether the situation in Serbia and Kosovo would continue to deteriorate, the Kosovo authorities released the arrested Serb policemen, and the Serbs agreed to remove the roadblocks.

The impending conflict was thus resolved.

While the mediation of Russia, China and India has played a large role, Vučić's role as Serbia's president is crucial.

This is not the first time Vučić has dealt with a national crisis.

As a country in the middle of a great power, how did Vučić lead Serbia to resolve crises one after another?

From Union to Republic

I believe that many people still remember the bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia by NATO in 1999, when Chinese took to the streets in indignation to protest, the Yugoslav people could only hide in the room without electricity and water in NATO's continuous air strikes, shivering, and they did not even have the strength to protest.

At that time, Yugoslavia was more appropriately called the FRY.

Located in the Balkans in southern Europe, Yugoslavia originally belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but after the dissolution of the First World War, the Kingdom of Serbia and Montenegro was merged, plus several Slavic areas to form a new state.

In 1929, the country was renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

After World War II, the world changed again, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia ceased to exist, and in 1945, under the leadership of the Croatian Tito, the Yugoslav Federation was established.

The newly established Federal Republic consisted of six republics, including Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and this approach also doomed the Federation to internal contradictions.

In 1974, Yugoslavia amended its constitution to recognize the autonomous status of the six member states.

In 1991, the three member states declared their independence.

Because some people want independence, some people oppose independence, and there are already different ethnic contradictions such as Serbia and Croatia in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a war has broken out in Bosnia and Herzegovina for three and a half years since 1992.

After the end of the war in 1995, other member states, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, became independent, and the remaining Serbia and Montenegro formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

In 1998, the Government of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia sent troops into Kosovo to maintain law and order as a result of violent attacks in Kosovo in Serbia, which resulted in the death of many civilians and policemen.

However, the United States and its allies accused the troops of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia of massacring the Albanian population and imposed sanctions on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on the grounds of "creating a humanitarian disaster."

In order to force the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to accept the peace agreement led by Western countries, NATO, led by the United States, carried out air strikes against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia for 78 days without the authorization of the United Nations Security Council.

In addition to military installations, hospitals and homes are also within NATO's target range.

The use of "humanitarian" pretexts to sanction the United States and NATO in the FRY has caused a larger-scale "humanitarian disaster" in which 3,500 people were killed, 12,500 injured and hundreds of thousands of refugees fled their homes.

It was at this time that the Chinese Embassy in Yugoslavia was attacked.

Under the pressure of NATO air strikes, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was forced to accept the peace agreement of Western countries, and the Kosovo area where the previous violent attacks occurred was taken over by the United Nations and NATO.

In 2002, former leaders of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, such as Milosevic, were extradited to the International Tribunal in The Hague for trial, and the former united Federal Republic of Yugoslavia ceased to exist.

In 2003, the name of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia was changed again to Serbia and Montenegro, which also indicated that the former Union State had become a more loose community of States.

However, even this loose community of states did not last long, and in 2006, Montenegro declared independence and "Serbia" dissolved.

In 2008, Kosovo also declared its independence from Serbia, but Kosovo's independence has not been recognized by the international community.

What was once the six powerful Yugoslav kingdoms united in the Balkans has now become six loose states and one Kosovo, which has been trying to separate from Serbia.

Such a Balkan Peninsula is what the United States, NATO and the European Union want to see.

But this is the shame of the Serbs, whose country has been bombed for 78 days, but they want to hand over the leader who has always maintained the unity of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in exchange for peace.

Even the ouster of Milosevic was also written by the CIA and MI6.

Ironically, in 2015, the International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled that former Yugoslav President Milosevic did not commit the crimes he was previously accused of in the Bosnian war.

But Milosevic died in The Hague prison in 2006.

Serbia in the middle

Today, Serbia is a small country with a land area of only 88,000 square kilometers and a population of 6.87 million, and many people have forgotten that it once had the name "Balkan Tiger".

But because of the support of the United States, the European Union and Western countries, Kosovo, once a province of Serbia, often wants to press this "Balkan tiger" to the ground and rub.

Allowing a country to make "regional independence" within it, thereby weakening the country's strength, is already a familiar routine for Western countries.

In order to maintain the unity of the country, the Serbian authorities sent Serb troops and police to Kosovo in an attempt to eliminate the Kosovo Liberation Army, the source of instability.

The so-called independence of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) is nothing more than a means for the benefit of extremists, and in the Kosovo secession movement led by them, countless civilians have fallen victim to politics.

In 1997 alone, 300,000 people were refugees in Kosovo as a result of frequent armed conflicts.

These are not within the consideration of the US-led NATO, but because the FRY insists on reunification and refuses to give up control over Kosovo, they carry out air strikes against the FRY, and the Kosovo War broke out.

In the end, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia did not resist the strong attack of NATO, and the Kosovo War ended with Kosovo under the trusteeship of the United Nations and NATO.

Before long, the Yugoslav Federation ceased to exist, splitting into two states, Serbia and Montenegro, and a region of Kosovo, which had never been recognized as independent by Serbia.

Serbia's national humiliation came from this, and for 23 years, although Kosovo's independence was recognized by the West, Serbia has always resisted high pressure and refused to recognize Kosovo's independence.

Thus began the contest between Serbia and the West. And in this contest, Serbia emerged another hero, he is Vučić, under his leadership, although Serbia did not bring Kosovo back, but did not completely lose this place, but under Vučić's efforts, fewer and fewer countries internationally recognized Kosovo's independence.

Defuse crises again and again

Born in Serbia in 1970, Vučić has been the president of Serbia since he became president of Serbia in 2017, and has shouldered the important task of maintaining Serbia's independent status in the cracks between Russia, the United States, and NATO.

But when the president came to power, he was named the "weakest president in the world."

However, "weakness" is only because there is no strong national strength to back it up, and it has to be done superficially, and judging from the crisis in Kosovo, Vučić actually has quite a means.

Vučić may have prepared for the worst by the time he said that Serbia had been "pushed into a corner", but he did not give up completely.

He first met with representatives of the Serb population in Kosovo, hoping that they would dismantle the roadblocks previously erected, followed by the announcement of the lifting of the highest level of combat readiness, in an effort to demonstrate his desire for a peaceful settlement of the dispute in Kosovo.

His actual actions also quickly paid off, and on the day Vučić announced the removal of the roadblocks, the Kosovo authorities also released the Serb policemen who had been previously arrested.

Although the mediation of Russia, China and India is indispensable, and Vučić specifically thanked these countries for their help, many people believe that Vučić played a key role in resolving the conflict.

And he also tested the bottom line of Western countries in this conflict resolution.

Why do you say that?

Because of this tense situation in the Kosovo region, when Vučić announced that the country had entered the highest level of combat readiness, Russia publicly stated its attitude.

Russia said it would provide support, including military means, in the event of war in Kosovo.

With Russia's tough attitude, NATO, which was dragged by Ukraine, really did not dare to go to war with Russia, coupled with the mediation of other countries, which compromised and calmed the dispute in Kosovo.

It will take some time to remove the barricades, but the release of Serb police is immediate, and Serbia naturally probes the bottom line of Western countries.

The game of big powers, if who can master the other party's bottom line, then their road after that will be much smoother, so Vučić's performance in this Kosovo situation cannot but be praised.

Moreover, after this crisis, nine countries withdrew their previous "recognition" of Kosovo's independence, and the number of countries that "rejected" Kosovo's independence was already greater than the number of countries that recognized.

Vučić also said that more and more countries will oppose Kosovo's independence, which also indicates that it will be more and more difficult for the West to "pinch" Sevilja to them through the Kosovo region.

In addition to this performance in the crisis in Kosovo, Vučić's operation in the epidemic also made him gain the favor of many countrymen.

On March 15, 2020, Vučić tearfully accused the EU at a press conference and asked for China's assistance:

"The unity of Europe is only written on paper ... Only China can really save Serbia..."

You must know that before this, Serbia has been moving closer to the EU in order to survive more securely in the cracks, and has expressed its desire to join the EU more than once.

But during the pandemic, the EU not only refused to lend a hand to Serbia, but also put up obstacles when Serbia wanted to import advanced medical equipment. So Serbia asked China for help.

After receiving Vučić's distress signal, China immediately sent a team of experts to Serbia with more than a dozen tons of protest materials.

Vučić also showed great gratitude, and after confirming the arrival of the Chinese team in Serbia, he came to the airport early to personally greet the Chinese team.

In addition, Vučić also kissed the Chinese national flag five-star red flag on the spot, and he emotionally expressed his gratitude to China in this way, and gained a lot of Chinese hearts.

Also in 2020, when Vučić came to the White House to sign an agreement with the leaders of the Kosovo region, the US president humiliated him with a "small chair" and showed his arrogance to the fullest.

In contrast, China's righteousness moved Vučić immensely.

So in 2021, when the German media questioned the relationship between Serbia and China in front of Vučić, Vučić, who was called the "weakest president", interrupted the reporter and said categorically: China is my dearest friend, please do not slander and hurt my friend.

These behaviors have constantly shown that his "weakness" and "timidity" are just helpless moves that he carefully maneuvered between European and American countries in order to safeguard national interests.

Personal dignity is not important to the stability of the country and the happiness of the people, and it is precisely because of such a president that Serbia has been able to survive one crisis after another in the cracks.

Only Serbs can continue to believe in him in another election, believing that Vučić can lead the Serbs to recover their ancestral land "Kosovo" and lead Serbia to prosperity and strength.
