The situation in Kosovo has recently escalated again. Serbian President Vučić said in an interview with local media on January 8 local time that the number of foreign spies pouring into Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, set a record during the New Year. In the interview, he compared Belgrade to Casablanca during World War II.

Serbian President Vučić: At New Year's time, Belgrade is like Casablanca. We got news that the hotel here has a large number of spies checking in, they are all decent-looking foreigners, and the number of people spying here is a record number. They also live in places such as private homes and villas.

Casablanca is a port city in northwestern Morocco and one of the important transit points for European exiles during World War II. Influenced by the 1942 Hollywood film of the same name, Casablanca, the French colonial city was once portrayed as a place full of Nazis and spies from around the globe.

Vučić said in the interview that Belgrade has not experienced such intensive intelligence activities since the time of World War II. The intelligence officers, he said, "apparently made all sorts of preparations." Vučić did not elaborate on which countries and regions the spies came from, but stressed that the mass influx of spies took place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions in Kosovo.

Kosovo is an autonomous province of the Republic of Serbia, and Serbia has always insisted on sovereignty over Kosovo after it unilaterally declared its independence in February 2008. Tensions escalated in northern Kosovo last December following protests over the arrest of a former Kosovo Serb policeman. At that time, Serbian President Vučić criticized the Western and Kosovo authorities for wanting the conflict to escalate.
