The Historic Quarter of the City of Colonia del Sacramento is located in the province of Colonia, Uruguay.
Built by the Portuguese in 1680 on the Rio de la Plata, the city of Colonia del Sacramento was of great strategic importance in defending against the Spaniards.
But after more than 100 years of struggle, the city was eventually abandoned, and because of this, many urban landscapes have been well preserved, such as Portuguese, Spanish urban architecture, and post-colonial style.
Colonial memorials and a tumultuous history grace the old town of Uruguay, a port of immigrants, where the Rio de la Plata plunges like a wedge into the South American continent between Argentina and Uruguay.
Its estuary is 280 km wide. Even inland, when the Paraná and Uruguay rivers meet, the banks of the rivers are 50 km apart. On Uruguay's southernmost peninsula, the town of Sacramento was founded on the edge of the savannah in 1680. The town was built as a result of rivalry between the two colonial powers, Spain and Portugal, and the bizarre blend of two different architectural styles reflects its turbulent history.
The Sacramento Immigrant Town now receives tens of thousands of visitors a year. But this sleepy town hasn't been shattered by the noisy and chaotic modern life.
High in the town, you can see the twinkling lights of Buenos Aires at night.
In 1680, the first Spanish expeditionary force set out from the city of Bu to capture the Portuguese stronghold of Sacramento.
The Río de la Plata is of great strategic importance. The Portuguese and Spanish fought for almost a century to seize control of the river.
After thousands of kilometers along the Paraná and Uruguay rivers, you reach the mouth of the Rio de la Plata, through which precious stones and hides from Bolivia and precious metals from Peru are transported to Europe.
The Spaniards and Portuguese also transported goods from opposite directions through this route to – usually by walking and private – to the hinterland of South America. It is generally believed that the first Spanish navigator to sail into the Río de la Plata was Juan Díaz de Soles, who arrived in 1516.
Later, looting boats and pirate adventures from Spain, England, France and the Netherlands also entered the estuary.
These people herd their livestock on unknown land, hoping that they would multiply quickly and make a fortune in the future.
