1 The soil must be fertile and loose and breathable
Growing vegetables on the balcony is particularly demanding on the soil, and I remember when I first planted vegetables on the balcony, I dug a little pastoral soil outside and went home to start planting vegetables.
At that time, I thought to myself, when the vegetables are alive, I will add a little more fat to make the vegetables grow well. But it's not as simple as I thought. In the first year, the vegetables I planted on the balcony, due to the lack of soil compaction and lack of fertility, the vegetables grown were thin and yellow, not only did not yield, but also seemed to have no edible value, and then I pulled out all those vegetables and used them for fertilizer.
So now I get the soil right before I grow vegetables. Just like when I plant lettuce, I bury some sugarcane leaves, walnut shells, peanut shells and the like under the planting bag in advance, and finally bury rotted sheep manure on the surface of the soil as bottom fertilizer. If you look at the picture below, this is the soil where I grow lettuce, and now the lettuce has grown so big, but the soil is still very loose and not hard at all.

Only if the soil is loose and breathable and nutritious, the vegetables we grow will grow better, on the contrary, if the soil is compacted for a long time, the root growth of vegetables is hindered, and the vegetables will definitely not grow well.
2 Choose strong seedlings for transplanting
The lettuce I planted on the balcony this year is all my own seedlings. When the seedlings are ready for transplanting, I choose some strong seedlings for transplanting.
When choosing lettuce seedlings, you must remember to choose this strong seedling with 4 thick leaves and no diseases and pests to transplant.

For those tall seedlings and lettuce seedlings with diseases and pests, everyone must decisively eliminate them, especially the kind of tall lettuce seedlings, if you transplant into the soil, no matter how much fertilizer you use later, its stem will not grow thick.
3 Timely replenishment of fertilizer water
Lettuce is a vegetable that needs to be highly fertile
When I used to see my father planting lettuce in my hometown, I fertilized the lettuce seedlings as soon as they were transplanted to live. Because if the fertilizer is applied late, the lettuce will soon be strung together, just like a child who lacks nutrition, only growing tall but not fat, thin and slender.
Like the lettuce I planted on the balcony this year, although I buried dried sheep manure in the soil, I still applied the fermented vegetable powder fertilizer three times after the lettuce seedlings survived. In addition to sufficient fertilizer, lettuce has high requirements for water, if the lettuce is short of water for a long time, its growth is also poor, and if the water is too much, the bottom of the root of the lettuce is easy to rot, so planting lettuce on the balcony should always pay attention to the dry and wet condition of the soil, and replenish fertilizer water in time. Like the lettuce I grow on my balcony, it is precisely because of the abundance of fertile water that the leaves are so green and the stems are also very thick.
