The Battle of the Liss was one of the bloodiest battles of World War I, and in April 1918, Portugal, as a member of the Allies, sent 75,000 soldiers of an expeditionary force to help fight in France, and on the front line of the Flemish battlefield in Belgium, they faced three German divisions, and the Portuguese soldiers suffered heavy casualties and were in extreme fatigue under continuous attacks.
Mihais fell into a state of madness, and a man constantly changed positions in the trenches, using more than a dozen Lewis light machine guns, and opened heavy fire on the flood of Hans. At that moment, he did not look afraid at all, and the hatred that erupted not only against the Germans, but began to hate the entire lifeless world.
Mihais remained in his position, firing machine guns at Germans from all directions, a real event that eventually led to the Germans' decision to bypass his position, and Mihais held out alone behind enemy lines for three days until he ran out of ammunition before retreating alone.
For his outstanding performance, Mihais was awarded Portugal's highest honor order, the Order of the Tower and the French Legion of Honor, and his hometown of Valongo was renamed the town of Valongo in Mihais, and on June 3, 1970, Mihais died in the town at the age of 74.
