Kill a lionfish

Lionfish are native to the Pacific and Indian Oceans. But over the past few decades, they have settled in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, and this invasion poses a serious threat to both tropical Atlantic coral reefs and their habitats.

The impact is alarming. A study conducted by scientists at Oregon State University found that in just five weeks, a lionfish reduced the number of juveniles in its feeding area by 80 percent. And their reproductive capacity is very strong: females lay about 25,000 eggs every few days. In some places, including the Bahamas, the proliferation of lionfish is likely responsible for the most dramatic change in biodiversity in coral reef habitats since industrialization.
