Lu Er: "Chinese technology" solves the problem of soft soil and completes major local projects with high quality

Thank you to Chinese enterprises for contributing to local economic growth and being willing to grow together – overseas employees tell what it is really like to be in a Chinese company and observe China

Chinese name: Lu Er

Nationality: Lebanese

Position: Regional Business Development Manager, Saudi Subsidiary of Shanghai Harbour Bay Group

Louai Al-jannoun, a Lebanese with 18 years of experience in civil engineering (structural and geotechnical), joined the Saudi subsidiary of Shanghai Port Bay Group in April 2021 as Regional Business Development Manager after working for European companies for many years. "This is my first time working for a Chinese company." Mr. Lu said he was amazed that he and his colleagues quickly supported each other at work, working so closely that they seemed to be friends they had known for years.

Shanghai Gangwan Group is an international company established in Shanghai, China, specializing in foundation reinforcement and piling. Since the establishment of its Middle East company, several projects have been completed locally. There are two "big projects" that Lu Er remembers vividly. One is the 5-million-square-meter New Jazan Airport, which will replace the existing small and old airport. The project is owned by GACA (Aviation Authority) and is located between Jazan and Jazan Economic City. "The location of the project not only leaves plenty of room for future expansion of the airport, but also supports the Jazan Economic City, which focuses on the development of energy and manufacturing in Saudi Arabia." Lu Er said that the new Jazan airport project will be an important measure to develop the infrastructure of the region and serve the citizens. "Harbour Middle East came up with a complete design and build proposal for New Jazan Airport, which meets standards and meets GACA (Aviation Authority) requirements by using crushed gravel piles to treat the tarmac, soft soil under taxiways and open areas, as well as the terminal's pile foundation." Lu Er said that according to the design requirements, the new airport will take off and land large aircraft in the future. Therefore, Harbour Middle East's approach was the most suitable for the site conditions of this project. The other is the Shoaiba RO 5 plant, which is part of SWCC (Saline Water Company's grand desalination plan) covering an area of 220,000 square meters, i.e. a new desalination plant using reverse osmosis desalination technology to reach a drinking water production capacity of 600,000 cubic meters per day. In line with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030, this important desalination plant will provide fresh water to residents and establish a development zone in Jeddah's southern region. The challenges of the project were poor ground conditions and tight construction timelines. Lu Er said that the technology provided by the company for this purpose is to use crushed stone piles to increase the bearing capacity of the land, so that civil works can be carried out safely. In the end, the company successfully completed the project with high quality and received good feedback from contractors and customers.

In Lu Er's view, the biggest signboard of Chinese enterprises is "integrity", and after taking over the business, they will try to achieve the goals set by customers. Now, Lu Er is confidently looking forward to developing the company's business in different regions in the coming years. "I can say that in less than a year, Harbor Saudi Arabia has made its mark in Saudi Arabia, and many new customers are approaching us to discuss cooperation with us."

"China is now moving from a manufacturing power to a manufacturing power with global influence." Lu Er said: As Arabs, we pay attention to China's contribution in the Arab world and the Middle East.

Ivan: The green and clean energy brought by the D3 power plant has made a positive contribution to local economic growth

Thank you to Chinese enterprises for contributing to local economic growth and being willing to grow together – overseas employees tell what it is really like to be in a Chinese company and observe China

Chinese name: Ivan Kakia

Nationality: Republic of Malta

Position: Deputy Director of the Safety Production Department of D3 Power Plant of Shanghai Electric Power Malta

Talking about his work at Shanghai Electric Malta's D3 power plant, Ivan Kakia compares himself to a "mechanical doctor" who prepares for the plant's various maintenance every day, and immediately "treats" if there is a failure.

Shanghai Electric Malta's D3 power plant is a combined cycle power plant consisting of eight 16 MW internal combustion engines, each running on natural gas and diesel dual fuel. "My colleagues and I had to make sure that all work schedules at the plant were carried out in a safe manner." Ivan says that once a problem is identified, he and his colleagues work together to find a solution to ensure that all engines are in good working order.

When Ivan first joined the D3 power plant, eight diesel engines were being converted from burning heavy oil to burning natural gas. "As in many parts of the world, Maltese are family-oriented. However, the employees of the D3 power plant devote their time and body to the oil-to-gas project to ensure that the project is completed on time. Ivan said that after the project transformation was completed and put into use, it not only led to the rapid development of the power plant, but also reduced emissions and pollution, and promoted the reduction of electricity costs. At that time, Ivan felt that he still remembered the scene. "This new technology brings new challenges, and I'm happy to be a part of it and do my part." Ivan said that this job not only provided him with a learning platform and enriched his professional knowledge, but also a great motivation for him to keep moving forward. Today, whenever he solves a difficult problem or completes a complex challenge, he feels a sense of accomplishment.

The completion of the D3 power plant brings green and clean energy to Malta. Ivan believes that a green and clean energy production and distribution system is one of the main pillars of Malta's economic stability, and the D3 power plant has made a positive contribution to local economic growth.
