By measuring brain size, dolphins are thought to be a highly intelligent animal.

Of course, large animals tend to have larger brains than small animals, so it's thought important to be the "brain index," which is the ratio of the actual brain size of an animal of the same weight to the predicted brain size.

The brain index of cats is 1, rabbits and mice are 0.4, and chimpanzees are 2.2-2.5. Humans had the highest brain index, around 7.5, while bottlenose dolphins had a brain index of 5.6.

This seems to prove that dolphins are quite intelligent, but in 2006, Paul Maniki, a researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, proposed another hypothesis: that most of the dolphin's brain is not used to think, but to regulate body temperature.

After all, dolphins are warm-blooded animals that live in cold water, and the deeper the sea, the lower the temperature.

Therefore, maintaining body temperature is crucial, and the dolphin's brain is not so much a thinking organ as a glorified thermostat.

In early 2010, scientists in the United States declared that dolphins should be considered "non-human" given their level of intelligence

They are based on brain-sized arguments and are less convincing than behavioral evidence.

After all, dolphins have been observed doing some very clever things, such as recognizing themselves in a mirror, covering their noses with a sponge to prevent themselves from being stabbed by a spiny fish, and teaching other dolphins techniques learned from humans.

All of these behaviors were once thought to be something only gorillas could do.
