Are house flowers not as fragrant as wildflowers? Mongolia obviously has mines, why does China import from Australia near and far?

author:Shizuya Shizushi

Mongolia, a country whose heart is higher than the sky and whose life is thinner than paper.

Mongolia, a land power with only two neighbors, said that it was afraid and wanted to find a "country" to ensure its security, and as a result, it found NATO; Mongolia also said that it was very lonely, with only two neighbors in the past hundred years, and wanted to find a "third neighbor" for itself, but found the United States. It seems that Mongolia has touched the doorway of Fan Yu's "distant friendship and close attack", and clearly wants to mingle with the two neighbors of China and Russia by mingling with the United States and other Western countries.

Therefore, Mongolia, sandwiched between the two great powers of China and Russia, did not work hard to offend both sides. But China and Russia seem to have a tacit understanding, and while not doing anything to it, they will never let it have a good time, ensuring that this neighbor is not good but does not die of hunger.

This setting has laid the groundwork for the crotch pulling of the Mongolian economy, and the economy cannot rise no matter how it develops.

However, in the view of Silent Night History, if the two neighbors are a stumbling block on the road to Mongolia's rise, then Mongolia's own mentality of "heart is higher than the sky, life is thinner than paper" is the root cause of Mongolia's inability to support the wall with such mud.

It is said that after the "October Revolution" in 1917, Soviet Russia, with its infinite "love" for the land, involuntarily inherited the tradition of "soil devouring" in Tsarist Russia, infiltrated its forces into Mongolia, and supported the Mongolian elite to establish a republican regime five years later, becoming the veritable 16th member country of the Soviet Union.

However, just when Mongolia was complacent about its "independence and self-determination", Stalin gave Mongolia a head start, forcibly taking over the financial system, and making Mongolia a complete economic vassal of the Soviet Union. In the face of the high pressure of the Soviet Union, Mongolia had neither the conditions nor the opportunity to resist, so it could only whisper to survive.

The rigid economy was inefficiently organized and caused the Soviet economy to falter quickly after decades of booming. In the case that the Soviet government mud Bodhisattva crossed the river itself, it was natural to take care of the "big Buddha" of Mongolia. Mongolia's economy "thrived" at a rate visible to the naked eye, and Mongolia survived on the Sino-Soviet border for decades, largely because of its unique geographical location and Soviet blood transfusions that stabilized its economy.

But with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Mongolia's good days of "sitting on the mountain and eating nothing" are gone, and it can only truly live an "independent" life in tears.

Because of the transformation of the Soviet Union, Mongolia has been controlled by the planned economic system for a long time, coupled with the rigid administrative system, resulting in the derailment of the Mongolian economy from the world in the past hundred years, and Mongolia has lost the opportunity to catch the last train of rapid development of the world economy.

At this time, Mongolia has only two ways to go, one is to have good relations with China, take advantage of China's economic take-off to get a piece of the pie, although it will not be rich, but it will not be too bad; Second, like Russia, living by selling resources and gnawing on old books is still moisturizing.

Interestingly, the Mongols, whose ancestors were broad, maintained an inexplicable sense of pride, despite their ability to sing and dance under the majesty of the Maxim machine gun. The Mongols generally believed that Genghis Khan unified the world, but later because of brotherly infighting, foreign tribes came down to pick peaches. So the former Genghis Khan became the proud capital of Mongolia.

Under the pan-Mongolism slogan "The Mongols of the whole world unite", Mongolia was determined to create a great Mongol empire from Eastern Siberia to Central Asia.

Under such circumstances, Inner Mongolia, as an inseparable part of the mainland territory, is naturally coveted by Mongolia, but the southern powers have more individual rockets than Maxim machine guns, and Mongolia can only look at the "grass" and sigh.

With the blessing of the so-called glorious history and sensitive character, Mongolia will subjectively not be friendly with the southern powers, and wants to catch the free ride of China's rapid economic development, unless China takes the initiative to catch up with Mongolia's resources to monetize.

In the field of resource exports, Mongolia is a blank piece of paper.

The reason why Russia can live well with the export of resources is largely because Russia inherited the industrial system and technology left over from the former Soviet Union, at least people can dig it up and sell it.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union, there was no way to talk about industrial development in Mongolia except for meadows with more sheep than people. This means that although Mongolia has more resources than cattle and sheep, its industrial system and technology cannot support the exploitation of resources, and its resource exports are not on paper.

Its extremely backward infrastructure construction is even more crotch-pulling than North Korea. It is no exaggeration to say that the infrastructure construction in most parts of Mongolia except Ulaanbaatar is almost no different from the time of Genghis Khan, and the difference may be that in the vast Mongolian steppe, there are a few more toilets led by female parliamentarians.

Even if mineral mining is carried out with external investment, there will be a speechless phenomenon, that is: the mining cost is 100, but it costs 1000 to ship out, which is not competitive in the market.

Because of the extreme lack of infrastructure, Mongolia needs to be prepared to make money from mining, specifically to build roads, the so-called "build roads before getting rich". But the question is, who would build roads in Mongolia for so-called mineral mining? Moreover, the business environment in Mongolia is so harsh.

Even if the road is repaired, the question arises again, where to transport these minerals out? The freight cost of air transportation is higher than the value of minerals, and the Mongolian "navy" does not even have sea except for a few ships, so land transportation has become the only option for Mongolia, and if you go by land, you must pass through China or Russia. However, in the context of Mongolia's "distant diplomatic relations and close attack" and regards the United States as a "third neighbor", how can Mongolia obtain the consent of China and Russia?

Russia has no reason to agree, because Russia, as a resource power, not only has more than enough to maintain its own needs, but even the whole of Europe lives under the shadow of Russian energy.

China has little reason to agree, after all, in the first 10 years of the 21st century, Mongolia caused indelible "psychological trauma" to mainland mining companies.

After entering the 21st century, China's economy began to take off, and domestic coal and steel began to be stretched, and they had no choice but to look for external import channels. Although Mongolia is still living in the glory of the past, Chinese mining companies still set their sights on Mongolia.

It is natural for you to make money and mine mines, but this win-win situation is ultimately no match for Mongolia's ambitions, and a "mining fever" has failed in the Mongolian government's changes.

Before 2009, there were more than 500 Chinese companies investing in minerals in Mongolia, but under the mysterious operation of Mongolia, more than 30% of Chinese companies failed to invest or were deceived, and only a handful of companies were able to retreat completely. In 2010, the Mongolian government saw that investors were making a lot of money, and Mongolia even announced with a presidential decree that all foreign-funded mining enterprises' mining rights in Mongolia were nationalized, leaving all investors without return. Mongolia, whose "heart is higher than the sky and life is thinner than paper", wanted to go it alone, but as a result, it made an absurd farce of insolvency. At this time, Mongolia wanted to use the same method to "attract investment" again, but this time no one cared.

Mongolia does not seem to be "interested" in foreign money, but the Mongols are very fanatical about money. Government policies are the same every day, the law is changing overnight, it seems that they do not care about the eyes of foreign investors, so that investors who come to Mongolia, it is not easy to come, if they want to go, they must peel a layer of skin, is the real "open the door to attract investment, close the door and fight the dog", this is similar to India's harvesting multinational enterprises, "governing the country according to law", in order to "legally" forcibly seize the law, they even speculate and sell land "on the spot" to introduce laws to ensure that foreign capital "can not be left behind". The Mongols show a fanatical attitude towards money, scams, extortion one after another, so on the issue of money, Mongolia's three views and India next door can not be said to be very similar, it is exactly the same.

Therefore, since this period, Mongolia has basically been sentenced to death by the mainland mineral metallurgy industry, so that China's mineral imports to Mongolia are getting smaller and smaller year by year.

Today, the mainland's annual imports of iron ore from Mongolia account for less than 1% of the mainland's ore imports, which can be said to be a symbolic "handout". The reason for this is largely to make Mongolia face passable, which is called "diversification of mineral sources".

But in fact, the self-sufficiency rate of mainland iron ore is only 20%, and more than 80% comes from imports. Of this, 67% of imports come from Australia, and the single source has led to market risks for the mainland steel industry. In fact, this risk has been amplified by Australia after the epidemic, and after 2020, the price of iron ore exported by Australia to the mainland has exceeded the cost of mining by 8 times through export taxes and price increases.

Even so, the mainland's imports of Mongolian iron ore have not increased but declined. Mongolian iron ore has only one buyer in China, a proper buyer's market, why does the mainland not import Mongolian iron ore in large quantities?

Silent Night Shi believes that the import of iron ore from Mongolia in large quantities, provided that Mongolia is provided with a large amount of infrastructure construction, especially railway construction, the upfront cost has exceeded the benefits brought by the next few decades. The cost of iron ore mining in Australia is only 15%-20% of the cost of iron ore mining on the mainland, but the cost of mining iron ore in Mongolia may soar to two to three times the cost of mining on the mainland, and Mongolia's little mineral resources are not worth our attention.

In addition, although Mongolia is rich in iron ore resources, it is mostly poor ore, and the iron content of iron ore can rarely reach 50%, and the quality is simply not comparable to Australia's iron ore. This also means that these iron ores have to undergo secondary processing before they can be forged into iron, which undoubtedly increases production costs. In addition, compared with the open-pit iron ore that can be directly excavated in Australia, Mongolian iron ore is basically buried underground, and Mongolia does not have this technology to travel underground.

Under the influence of various factors, even if China would rather spend a high price to import iron ore from Australia, it is not willing to import iron ore from Mongolia. Australia has been operating in iron ore exports for decades, and its mining, export, transportation and other supporting processes around iron ore exports have formed a mature system, coupled with low maritime transportation costs, Australia's iron ore is undoubtedly a best choice.

In general, iron ore imports from Australia rather than Mongolia are largely due to objective constraints and political considerations. Mongolia is trying to survive between two big countries, and it knows how to be guilty, and does not dare to improve technology to expand production capacity, which is actually a means for small countries to survive. Play yourself from a resource country into a chicken rib waste, and no one in the north and south will be ambitious about it, so it is better not to develop, and the development is only from a small leek to a big leek.

It's just that Mongolia is playing very well in "lying flat" economically, but politically and militarily it still wants to restore the glory of its ancestors, dragging the United States and NATO to the end, which also dooms Mongolia to the end of self-deception.

There are many omissions, please correct them.
