It mainly inhabits lakes, rivers, swamps and ponds in mountain or plain forests, and can reach altitudes of about 3000 meters. It is often active alone or in pairs, mostly in shallow water, gravel banks, mud, sandy beaches, paddy fields and swamps. It feeds on small invertebrates such as worms, shrimp, spiders, mussels, field snails, insects, insect larvae, and occasionally small fish and rice. This one just caught a fish to eat.
