Gulf War - Highway of Death (Chapter 10)

February 26, 1991 8:00 pm

Highway 8 to Basra in Iraq

1st Armored Division of the Iraqi Republican Guard - "Hammurabi" Division

"Iraq must remember that Kuwait was part of Iraq's constitution from August 2 last year until this withdrawal!" Saddam's noon speech still echoed in Muhammad's ears, but he could not calm down for a long time.

Suddenly, two BMP-1s in front of it burst into flames, blocking the path of the convoy. Muhammad, who had seen the coalition air raids, was shocked and immediately reacted that the coalition forces were going to kill them. Half a minute later, the last two Type 69 tanks of the convoy were also destroyed, and the turret flew under the road. The Iraqi convoy on the march was immediately blocked in the center and could not move - a typical "pinching the head and tail and eating the middle" style of play.

"Rush over!" Mohammed told the driver of the car that fortunately the T-72M had enough horsepower to knock through the wreckage of the BMP-1. However...... The suddenly rushed T-72M, coupled with the antennas lined up behind the turret, had already attracted the attention of the US AH-64 attack helicopter, and the weapons officer rewarded Muhammad with two Hellfire missiles and sent them to hell.

Just over a month earlier, Mohammed had commanded a fully loaded T-72M tank company as commander of the vanguard armoured company marching into Kuwait, but during the 42 days of continuous air strikes that began on January 16, one of his companies was reduced to half a platoon, leaving only three T-72Ms and two BMP-1s still able to move and withdraw to Iraqi territory. The situation of the entire division was no better, and more than 50 per cent of the heavy equipment was lost in Kuwait as a result of air strikes.

At noon on February 26 , 1991 , Saddam ordered Iraqi troops to evacuate Kuwait , and the Hammurabi Division planned to break through at night , but the American generals did not intend to leave them a way to survive and sent AH-64s to deal a devastating blow as they retreated. However, the "road of death" in the history of the Gulf War was not the section of Highway 8 in Iraq, but Highway 80 in Kuwait.

At the same time as the "Hammurabi" division suffered a devastating blow, the Kuwaiti section of the road also became purgatory. U.S. troops sent A-10 attack aircraft to attack convoys using cluster bombs and depleted uranium armor-piercing shells, and the bombing continued overnight until the next morning. Unlike the officially declared convoy of Iraqi soldiers, there are a large number of cars, buses, vans and other non-military vehicles in the wreckage, so this team also includes a large number of civilians.

U.S. Air Force Major Mark Welsh described afterwards: "I was sure I had killed people before the Gulf War, but this time, I really watched them killed." I saw the car moving before it was hit by the bomb, I saw Iraqi soldiers opening fire on me, they fled when I dropped the bomb, and I tried my best not to let them escape, and my order was, kill them. ”

According to later statistics, thousands of people died in the air raid, about 2,000 Iraqi vehicles were destroyed, and the wreckage stretched for a full 36 kilometers. Compared with these Iraqi soldiers who were cut off from the way of retreat, could only sit and wait, and had no ability to resist, their comrades who may have died in the battle of East 73 may be lucky...
