As the Royal Marines celebrated their 358th birthday, King Charles sent a message to the Marines that he would take over the new post of Royal Marine Corps, saying he was personally "particularly proud" to serve after so many family members had followed in the footsteps of the Royal Navy.

The announcement came as the Royal Marines celebrated its 358th birthday.
Prince Harry, who has held the position since 2017, was reportedly saddened and "devastated" when he resigned in March 2020.
"I feel like I've let people down, but I have no choice," he told Royal Marine Corps Commander Matthew Holmes and other senior figures at the Mountbatten Festival two years ago.
After appointing King Charles today, he said in a personal message: "It is my greatest honor to hold the post of your general.
"Over the past three and a half centuries, I have proudly followed in the footsteps of my many family members who have taken on this role with deep admiration.
"The Royal Marines have an outstanding and unrivalled history on land and at sea. I am greatly inspired by your courage, determination, self-discipline and extraordinary ability to endure in the most extreme circumstances. ”
