Peter was a black slave on a plantation in Louisiana, and the plantation overseer beat him violently, almost killing him. Peter then decided to flee to the North, where he struggled to avoid being pursued, and when he arrived he joined the Union Army. During a routine medical examination, Peter exposed his spine to the military doctors, and the scars were shocking, and the military doctors immediately photographed his scars. The May 1863 issue of Independent and July Harper's Weekly published a photograph titled "Scarred Back." The photograph spread around the world, eventually leading to a growing public rejection of slavery and racism.
