The scene of the farewell ceremony of Liu Siqi's body

At 1:47 a.m. on January 7, 2022, Comrade Liu Siqi, the daughter-in-law of Chairman Mao and the wife of Mao Anying, a martyr of the Volunteer Army, died in Beijing at the age of 92.

On the morning of January 13, the farewell ceremony of Liu Siqi's body was held at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing. In the hall of the cemetery's East Auditorium, Liu Siqi's body lies quietly among the flowers and cypresses, and the remains are covered with a Chinese Communist Party flag. On both sides of the hall are wreaths sent by central leaders, Liu Siqi's relatives, friends and people from all walks of life.

At the scene of the farewell ceremony of the body, the violin song of "I Love You, China" is low and graceful. At about 10 o'clock, Chairman Mao's grandson Mao Xinyu, daughter Li Min, Li Ne's children, and granddaughter Kong Dongmei slowly walked to Liu Siqi's body and bowed in silence and three times, and then they walked up to Liu Siqi's children and shook hands with them one by one to express their condolences.

It was also on this occasion that many people learned that Liu Siqi had 4 children. Unfortunately, Liu Siqi's husband, 94-year-old Yang Maozhi and Li Min Li Ne were all unable to come to the scene to bid farewell due to their advanced age and inconvenient legs and feet.

It is also because of Liu Siqi's death that people learned the names of her 4 children from relevant media reports, namely: Yang Xiaoying, Yang Dongmei, Yang Mi and Yang Jun. Yang Xiaoying is the eldest son, and the name has a different meaning, it is Liu Siqi and Yang Maozhi to commemorate Mao Anying.

For a long time, people only knew that Liu Siqi remarried after Mao Anying's sacrifice, and little was known about the personal situation of her second husband, Yang Maozhi. So, how did Liu Siqi and Yang Maozhi come together? What is Yang Maozhi's special identity? All of this must start with Mao Anying's sacrifice in the Korean battlefield.

On October 7, 1950, Mao Anying was approved to join the volunteer army as a Russian translator and confidential secretary of Peng Dehuai. Mao Anying signed up to join the volunteer army, and his wife Liu Siqi did not know about it. On October 14, Mao Anying's last day in Beijing, when he was the deputy secretary of the party branch of the Beijing Machinery General Factory.

Mao Anying decided to use the day to say goodbye to factory colleagues, relatives and friends, and after that, he rode his bicycle to Beijing 301 Hospital to say goodbye to his wife Liu Siqi. Liu Siqi suffered from acute appendicitis on the eve of National Day and was admitted to Beijing 301 Hospital for surgery.

Mao Anying felt a little guilty, he was too busy at work, and the last time he met Liu Siqi was the day after she underwent surgery. At that meeting, the two only talked for a while, and Mao Anying left the hospital because of a temporary matter. Now he has to see his wife again after nearly half a month, and the next day he is going to Shenyang for a military conference, and from there he will go to the Korean battlefield.

China's dispatch of troops into North Korea requires strict secrecy, and Mao Anying wants to decide whether to go or on a business trip, so that Liu Siqi will not be suspicious. At about 9 p.m., when Mao Anying walked into the hospital ward, Liu Siqi was sitting on the bed reading a book, his face was pale, and he looked very weak at a glance.

Seeing that her husband had come, Liu Siqi was happy and a little angry. Mao Anying quickly stepped forward and clasped his wife's hand tightly, and said to himself: "What is going on now, does the wound of the operation still hurt?" Liu Siqi shook her head, looking at her sweaty husband, she was quite distressed.

"Where have you been these days?" Liu Siqi asked in a low voice. Mao Anying recounted what he had done these days, but concealed the fact that he had signed up for the volunteer army. After a moment of silence, Mao Anying said, "Si Qi, I will be on a business trip tomorrow." After Mao Anying and Liu Siqi got married, Liu Siqi continued to study, and Mao Anying often traveled on business.

Ms. Liu was not too happy because the next day was the first anniversary of their marriage, but she did not ask her husband where he was on business. This is because before the two got married, there was a principle, after Mao Anying went on a business trip, Liu Siqi should not ask what he should not ask, what he should not know does not know, and what he should not say does not say.

Liu Siqi later said: "In 1950, for me, superstitious words were a disaster of blood and light. I had tonsillar surgery in August, which was a very simple thing, and as a result, I immediately hemorrhaged and coughed up bloody phlegm. Now Mao Anying is going on a business trip again, this time different, he decided to tell his wife some things, which Liu Siqi later called "Mao Anying's will."

Mao Anying explained four things: First, no matter what situation you encounter in the future and how difficult it is, you must first complete your studies; Second, every Saturday during the holidays, I must go to Zhongnanhai to visit my father, and I don't want him to go if I am not in Beijing; Third, Mao Anqing's self-care ability is poor, and he hopes that Liu Siqi will take care of him; Fourth, pay more attention to some people and have less contact with them.

Mao Anying also told Liu Siqi that he was going to a very distant place on a business trip this time, and if he did not receive his letter for the time being, don't worry, there will definitely be news from him. It was late at night, and the time for the final separation had come. At 11 p.m., Mao Anying left the hospital, and Liu Siqi insisted on sending him to the hospital gate.

Mao Anying persuaded Liu Siqi to return to the ward, and after taking a few steps, he suddenly turned around and bowed deeply to his wife. Liu Siqi recalled: "At that time, I was stunned and stunned. He slowly straightened his waist, took a few steps backwards, tried to speak several times, looked at me with his eyes in fascination for a moment, and then turned eagerly and hurried out of the door, never looking back. ”

Shortly after Mao Anying went to Korea, he wrote a letter to Liu Siqi, but it was sent to Liu Siqi from within the organization, without a postmark. In the letter, Mao Anying repeatedly asked Liu Siqi about his physical condition and expressed his deep apologies for not spending more time with her after marriage. After that, Liu Siqi never received a letter from Mao Anying again.

Chairman Mao and Mao Anying

On November 25, 1950, Mao Anying died in Korea at the age of 28. A month later, Chairman Mao learned the bad news of Mao Anying's death, and he decided to temporarily hide it from his daughter-in-law. After Mao Anying left, Liu Siqi went to Zhongnanhai every week on vacation to visit his father, and Chairman Mao looked at his daughter-in-law in front of him, and he could not bear to tell her the truth.

For a month, two months, a year, two years, countless days and nights, Liu Siqi was waiting for her husband to suddenly appear in front of him. One day in 1952, Hou Bo, head of the photography section of the Security Bureau of the General Office of the Central Committee, gave Liu Siqi a photo of Mao Anying. In the photo, Mao Anying is wearing a volunteer uniform and a Korean People's Army military hat, and he is smiling.

"Kishi Ying went to the Korean battlefield?" Liu Siqi thought about the previous time he saw Li Kenong, the other party looked at her with complicated eyes, did not ask her about Mao Anying's situation, and seemed to have something to hide from her. Liu Siqi had an ominous premonition, and she couldn't bear it any longer, and she took the photo and went to Zhongnanhai.

When Chairman Mao saw the photo, after a moment of silence, he said in a tone of great sorrow: "Kishiying died two years ago, and it took me a long time to learn, Si Qi, that you will be my own daughter from now on." Before coming, Liu Siqi had doubts, but he never expected that Mao Anying had died.

Liu Siqi collapsed, his mind went blank, and he collapsed to the ground and cried. Liu Siqi didn't know how long he had been crying, only to hear someone in his ear say, "Si Qi, your father's hands are already cold." Liu Siqi woke up and looked up to see Chairman Mao sitting on the sofa, with an expression of extreme pain on his face.

Liu Siqi quickly stepped forward and tightly shook Chairman Mao's hand, wiped away his tears, and said: "Father, I will never cry again, if Kian Ying knows that I am like this, he will definitely be sad, I want to be strong!" Looking at his daughter-in-law, who was only 22 years old in front of him, Chairman Mao nodded, and from then on he regarded her as his own daughter.

When Liu Siqi left, Chairman Mao thought that his daughter-in-law suddenly learned the bad news and must not be able to sleep at night, so he gave her 3 sleeping pills that he often ate, so that she could eat one at night when she really could not sleep. In order to let his daughter-in-law come out of the grief of widowhood as soon as possible, Chairman Mao cared about all aspects of Liu Siqi.

In 1954, Liu Siqi graduated from high school, and Chairman Mao arranged for her to study in the Soviet Union and enter the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Moscow University. In a foreign country, Chairman Mao was very concerned about Liu Siqi's situation and wrote to her many times. Liu Siqi needs to learn Russian, coupled with the pressure of the course, and the water and soil are not satisfied, which makes her study very stressful, and as a result, she often gets sick.

When Chairman Mao learned of the situation, he immediately wrote a letter to Liu Siqi:

"Dear Si Qi'er: I am very happy that all the letters to me have been received. I hope you pay attention to your body, don't make you sick, and study hard. We're all good, don't think about it. Domestic socialism is on the rise, do you have a domestic newspaper there? You should find the newspaper and read some domestic news, and don't be too isolated from the domestic situation. ”

In 1957, Liu Siqi took advantage of the summer vacation to return to China, and she informed Chairman Mao of her desire to transfer to China to study. Chairman Mao went out to inspect at that time, and after receiving Liu Siqi's letter, he immediately replied to the letter to express his understanding, but Chairman Mao handled this matter quite principledly. In the letter, Chairman Mao wrote:

"It's good to transfer schools, make your own decisions, apply to the organization, and get permission." If not, it does not matter if you still go to the Soviet Union and change to liberal arts, it does not matter if you want to do so. No matter what, you must make your own decisions, do not apply in the name of parents, pay attention to hope. ”

Liu Siqi submitted an application to the organization, which was later approved. In the autumn of 1957, Liu Siqi transferred back to China to study at Peking University, first studying in the Russian Department of Peking University, and then transferring to the Department of Chinese to study classical literature. In the autumn of 1961, Liu Siqi successfully graduated from Peking University and was assigned to a scientific research department of the People's Liberation Army Engineering Corps, responsible for translation.

Chairman Mao and Liu Siqi

Mao Anying has been sacrificed for 11 years, and Liu Siqi has also passed the age of establishment, but she is still single, and usually her mother Zhang Wenqiu was rejected as soon as she talked to her about remarrying. In fact, Chairman Mao has always had a heart matter, that is, to persuade Liu Siqi to remarry as soon as possible. As early as 1959, Chairman Mao said to Liu Siqi in a serious tone:

"Si Qi, your father's love for Kishi-ying is clear and understandable, so this time Dad arranged for you to visit Kiem-ying in North Korea to let you remember him forever." But we are materialists, and the Communists do not advocate keeping the door and ending with the other. You've been single for ten years, and my heart hurts! You are still young, rebuilding a family, for physical and mental health, for work, for the development of the construction cause will be beneficial, but also the best memorial and comfort for the shore of the Ying, let your father introduce you to an object! ”

Now that Liu Siqi is 31 years old, he can't go on like this all the time. Chairman Mao decided to formally persuade Liu Siqi to remarry, and to this end wrote a sincere letter:

"Daughter: Hello! Where is the reason for forgetting? After a long time, doubts arise, don't they? Brain pain to pay attention to. It's the reason to learn too much. And always want to get married, why don't you listen to the advice? Make up your mind to get married, it's time. The five hearts are uncertain, and the loss is clean. Whether it is high or low is a common disease of girls like you. Isn't it? Letter to, reply to me as hope! ”

Chairman Mao cared so much about herself, Liu Siqi was moved to tears, she knew it was time to reorganize the family, so she agreed. Chairman Mao was very happy and immediately arranged a suitable blind date for Liu Siqi. Against this background, Liu Zhen, then deputy commander of the Air Force and dean of the Air Force Academy, recommended Yang Maozhi, who was then serving as a faculty member in the teaching and research department of the military academy's strike aircraft.

Soon, a background investigation report on Yang Maozhi's identity was sent to Chairman Mao's desk. Yang Maozhi, born in 1932 in Tangshan, Hebei Province, his parents are simple fishermen and have a good reputation in the local area. After the founding of New China, Yang Maozhi chose to join the army and became the first batch of cadets of the Air Force that had just been established.

Later, Yang Maozhi's outstanding performance was sent to the Soviet Union by his superiors to study and enter the Soviet Red Flag Air Force Academy. In the second year of Yang Maozhi's arrival in Moscow, Liu Siqi also came to Moscow to study, when there were many Chinese students studying in the Soviet Union, and everyone regularly participated in various networking parties.

Liu Zhen told Chairman Mao that Yang Maozhi was a very good young man and was well respected by everyone in his unit. Therefore, Chairman Mao arranged for Yang Maozhi to meet with Liu Siqi, not thinking that the two had a relationship at the Moscow Chinese Students Friendship Party. After spending some time together, Liu Siqi and Yang Maozhi had the idea of getting married.

That day, Liu Siqi and Yang Maozhi came to Zhongnanhai, and they told Chairman Mao that the wedding was about to be held. Chairman Mao was particularly pleased, and gave them a copy of the word "Bu Suanzi Yongmei" that he had recently created. In February 1962, 32-year-old Liu Siqi and 30-year-old Yang Maozhi held a wedding ceremony in Beijing.

The wedding ceremony was very simple, with only ordinary wine and dishes. Chairman Mao did not appear on the spot, but he asked his secretary to send 300 yuan and a handwritten letter. In the letter, Chairman Mao once again congratulated the two on their marriage, hoping that Liu Siqi would run the family well and tell him that if he encountered difficulties, he would often return to Zhongnanhai to have a look.

In the days that followed, Liu Siqi and Yang Maozhi gave birth to 4 children. When the eldest son was born, Yang Maozhi consulted with Liu Siqi and named him "Yang Xiaoying" to pay tribute to Mao Anying, who sacrificed his life for the country. Although Liu Siqi remarried, her thoughts of Mao Anying increased unabated, and she went to Korea many times before her death to visit Mao Anying's grave.

In October 2020, the "Exhibition of Chinese and DPRK Art Exchange in Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Chinese Volunteers' Fight to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea" was held at the Mansudai Art Museum in North Korea, Beijing, and Liu Siqi, who is already 90 years old, also came to the scene. On the opening day, Liu Siqi was invited to unveil the sculpture of Mao Anying created by North Korean artist Yoo Ho-ro.

Liu Siqi said affectionately: "In the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, China and the DPRK sacrificed thousands of heroic sons and daughters, and Mao Anying was also one of them. He is the eternal pain and pride in my heart, and I wish that the friendship condensed by the Chinese and Korean people with their blood and life will last forever. ”
