Alaric I, one of the 100 people who influenced and changed the course of world history

The Visigoths originally lived in the northern part of Western Rome, but later moved west due to incursions by the Huns. The constant migration intensified the contradictions between the Visigoths and the Romans, and war inevitably broke out. In 378, the war ended in a Visigothic victory.

The Roman Emperor Theodosius I had no choice but to place the Visigoths on the border and order them to fight on the border. Years later, a prominent leader appeared in this frontier army, Araric.

Born on the Danube, Araric experienced the migration of his people as a teenager, and later grew into a prominent general in the Shubian Army. The year 395 was an unusual year for both the Visigothic and Roman Empires, with the death of Theodosius I and the Visigoths leaving the Roman Empire to rule and electing Alaric as king. Subsequently, Alaric provoked a war against Rome.

Invincible, the army led by Ararik captured important cities such as Greece, Corinth, Argos and Sparta, and carried out crazy looting. After witnessing the unbearable situation of its neighbors, Athens took the initiative to pay a ransom to Alaric and spared the people. Just as Alaric was dying, his nemesis, Styreco, appeared, and he had to retreat in a hurry with his looted wealth. At the same time, the emperors of Eastern Rome, frightened by Alarric's conquests, exchanged the provinces of Illyria for tranquility.

In 402, Alaric provoked another conquest, but in Italy he met again with Styrico and suffered the same fate—a fiasco. Later, the Western Roman Emperor Arcadius hoped to use Ararik's army to unify Eastern Rome, so he reached an agreement with Ararik and established an alliance. But after Arcadius's death in 408, Western Rome cancelled its plans to unify Rome and proposed to break the covenant with Ararik. Arrarik demanded economic compensation from Western Rome, and with the persuasion of Styreco, Western Rome finally agreed to Arrarik's terms, temporarily calming the state of the two sides.

However, soon after the unfortunate event occurred, Styrico was killed for false accusations, and his army, determined to avenge him, joined Araric's ranks. Araric then provoked the war on the grounds that he had not received compensation, and soon Italy became the possession of Arrarik, and Rome was also under siege, and the helpless Romans hoped to exchange a huge amount of gold for peace but was refused.

In 410, the Visigoths still conquered Rome, breaking the myth that the "Eternal City" Rome could not be conquered. Later, they occupied Aquitaine in Gaul and established the Visigothic Kingdom as their capital. It is worth mentioning that the Visigoths did not change the culture and way of life of the Aquitaines.

After the establishment of the Visigothic Kingdom, Alaric hoped to provoke another invasion of Sicily and North Africa, but the sky was not good, his plans were stranded by bad weather, and unfortunately, Alaric died soon after.
